See my posting on: What is Your Thought Process?

It starta out: "I hate to admit it but I got my highest score on a photo I submgitted here, was using my less expensive Sony DSC-707...."

Okay, now I'm a little worried. Am I reading the Advanced Rules wrong? In the 'You May' section I'm seeing 'clone out incidental power lines...'? Please let me know where I've got this one wrong - I don't get to use Advanced often enough to feel confident about it!

Edited to add: 2 out of 3 of my 6+ scores are with my P&S and all my editing has been done with GIMP (except that one experiment, but I don't like to think about that).

you are right, just that you said expert which means you can use more than one photo.

That's embarrassing! Would you believe me that I reread it several times before hitting 'post'? Guess I got a little over excited! Fixed now!

I do wonder if Ansel Adams would of used photoshop if he had it at his disposal.

I worked with Ansel Adams. He was very much in favor of anything that helped a photographer realize his/her vision in the print. He'd have loved the creative possibilities of Photoshop.

R.

I didn't work with Mr. Adams, but I took a class on his "Zone" from him in the early 80s. The impression I got from him, and believe me I am never sure about anything, was that the final product was the main concern. Oh... not that things should be twisted and/or faked, but that whatever it took to bring forth the best photograph was perfect.

I got the impression that to him, you work your patootie off to get the absolute best shot you can using the camera. Then, in the darkroom (in digital I guess this would be Photoshop) you would work to bring the photograph to a point that was the closest to what you saw through the viewfinder before pressing the shutter release.

I am very envious, if not totally jealous, of you having worked with this man. If ever there was a man who loved what he was doing, Mr. Adams was it... and his enthusiasm was more infectious than a child's laughter.

Guess if Photography can be Fiction or nonfiction. Guess if you guy want to rub out key details like powerlines. You guys are writing a novel.

I believe photographer shouldn't mislead the viewer of any photograph.

Every photograph misleads.

Every photograph misleads.

Exactly, choice of crop, DoF, perspective, angle ... all distort reality. When you transpose a infinite 3D world onto a very limited 2D frame, you can't in anyway be completely non-deceptive.

is it distort or pinpoint, in that respect?

can you tell what you're eye is actually doing for a given 1/200th of a second? the photo leads the eye, but doesn't necessarily 'mis-lead'.

your eye selectively focuses, just as the photographer does.

I think the biggest limitations/distortions are, as Leroy pointed out, that the image is 2 dimensions and the fact that you see only what is in the crop and that tells a story out of context.

But I concede that it tells a truth from the captured moment in time just not the whole truth.
