do you think f/4 w/fill flash and decent shutter speed should be good just for gettting photos of the grads arriving and hanging out outside before the ceremony?
Then for inside i have my 50mm/1.4
and then for the actual "dinner dance" im going to use my 24-70mm w/ fill flash again.
Do you think that'll work? any other suggestions would be appreciated!

I shot my daughter's graduation last weekend. You should do fine with the set-up you described..... but.... don't forget to bump that ISO way up. I shot at 1600 and got some great shots! :)

the arrivals are during the day so i won't need to use a high ISO. But when were indoors during the ceremony I wil have to bump up my ISO, and same at the dinner dance. During the dance do you think i should use flash or just available light?

and also doyou think I should use my omnibounce diffuser on my flash or just go striaght flash with no diffuser?

I would use the diffuser on the flash - shots will look so much nicer. During the dance you could play with some flash shots and some non-flash shots (for a nice motion blur).

if the dance isnt too dark, id try bouncing my flash off roof (if white roof thats not too high). then id try some slower shutter speeds to show the movements. then, id try some slow shutter speeds with flash to freeze them w/movements. id try anything different because you're shooting digital and can blast off 1000 shots w/out any problems.
