It would be nice to hear the thoughts of the ribbon winners. Things like composition, props, settings, outtakes(ideas not used) etc used for their winning shots.

Not being close to a ribbon, I think this could inspire and help those that have not won yet. Maybe do an individual photography discussion thread.

I thnk that would be a great idea. I'd really like to hear the process that leads to some of these photos.

Probably not exactly what you wanted but it's all for fun!

This was my first ribbon. I was sitting on a 5 foot wall, swinging my legs, using my 1.9mp camera handheld. This was one of only a few that was surprisingly non-blurry. This was more the result of taking a non-challenge picture that just so happened to work for a challenge. In my head I was trying for the people and the fireworks in order to give it some depth and reference.

My second ribbon from a speed challenge. This one was clearly set up in my mind and I went out purposefully to purchase the props. Involved taking over 200 shots at different angles, heights, and with different lighting. Used oil, hairspray, and flour to try and kill the shine on the apple so it wouldnt reflect the light (obviously they didnt work). Originally wanted to do a b&w scene with just the apple in color but the desk had too many red hues and time was running out.

My latest ribbon. Again this was a setup shot with the placement of the vase and light. Tried sticking a number of things into the vase but nothing worked. After reading comments I wish I had left it empty. This is probably my most surprise win as I saw flaws in it that I wish I could have corrected.

I just recently won my first ribbon (yellow), and I would have to say the most important thing to keep in mind is never settle for anything but perfection. Persevere until you get exactly what you want without any flaws! You'll end up being happiest in the end, and you'll most likely end up doing much better in the challenge!

I could say many things here but the most important as a beginner was to know my camera!

Then... see through the eyes of a child and wonder at the simple things.. then take photos of these simple things that inspire you.

I have to say that I learned more from the images that didn't win a ribbon than from the two images that did. The major points I learned (but still don't always follow) are:

- Try to realize how the others will see the picture and don't fall in love with it too early, you might be the only one. Also you are more disappointed when it does not work well during voting. For me that's the hardest part: often I tend to like my image so much that it does not come into my mind that other just don't like it.

- Do not work hard on picky details before the overall concept isn't
straight forward and has a wow effect.

- Ask friends what they think about it and if they don't say from the very beginning "this is great", but rather start talking nicely about pros and cons, re-think your picture.

- look for uniqueness: your picture might be the best you have ever made, but if its topic is rather obvious and thus chosen by many others, it will be voted lower.
Uniqueness probably made me win the blue ribbon in the occupation challenge as well in the money challenge.

These are just tips regarding the topic choice. Technically (focus, light, background etc.) it has of course to be flawless.
