I've seen quite a few pics lately that seem to have that dithering effect or distortion in the compression of the image. But I'm not finding anyone else commenting on it. I find that it distracts from the image, so if I see it, I may rate it 1 point lower than if it wasn't there (I don't think 1 point deduction is unreasonable).
I want to make sure that it isn't my monitor. Can anyone see it in this image? (in the blue background) Maybe voters aren't bothered by it, or they see it and don't mention it in their comments, but either way, I want to make sure I'm not deducting points if there's something wonky with my monitor...
For the record, I rated this photo pretty high, but I did subtract the 1 point.

I don't see any artifact. Is your monitor set to True color or millions of colors (you want it to be). May be the problem. I could see a touch of artifact right above the flower in the thumbnail, but that is it.

To me the image is perfect, especially in the background, very homogeneous without dithering, noise and what-so-ever.

Looks good except I just noticed a little smudge on the bottom left corner. Barely visible.

No dithering on my monitor. The blue background looks very solid. |

Ten, Are you looking at the image on a CRT or LCD? On my laptop I can see the banding you refer to, on the desktop monitor it isn't visible. Before anybody asks both monitors are calibrated and displaying 24bit colour

Looks good to me. Make sure you are in at least 16 bit color mode. Otherwise, colors start to look pasty and that could look like compression artifacts. |

I see what you are referring to. I have to ask, what kind of internet connection do you use? I see the banding when I first load the page because I am using a dial-up connection with an accellorator. When I refresh the image in full quality the bands disappear. If you have any kind of compression going on to allow the pages to download faster, this could be why you are seeing the bands. Just a thought. :-) |

Thanks for the feedback. It's an IBM 17" monitor (normal display, not LCD). It's set at 16 bit. I swicthed it to 32 bit and it looks much better. I can still see some minor distortion, so it looks like I'll have to play around with it. My monitor was calibrated a few months ago, so I thought it was good to go. Thanks again. |

Not a bad idea to recal every month, per many "experts." |

Also recommended when you move the moniter or put any new electronic items near it. Magnetic fields are suppose to effect the moniters.

I just recalibrated it and the settings were pretty much the same, but changing it from 16bit to 32bit seems to have corrected it. I went back and looked and previous comments I made on images with that compression look, and the compression isn't visible. I'm glad I asked. And glad I only deducted 1 point. I still feel kind of bad about it though. I never knew abuot the 16 bit 32 bit thing. Maybe someone else will see this and leearn too.

I had almost the exact same question and jmsetzler let me know about changing my 16bits to 32bits.. world of difference. So glad to know I'm not the only one that was having this problem, and its great that it is such an easy fix too. :) |

Dumb question: where do I look in my MAC G4(OS 10) to see what it is(16 or 32 bits)?
While I'm at it, what is the right setting for the display color ?
Mine is set at Colormatch RGB.

You Don't need to worry about it, They're talking about PC's only...
...but you do need a correct monitor profile. A profile should of came with the monitor? Have you ever calibrated it? Color management is pretty technical and can get confusing... |

The Apple default setting, which is usually an excellent (default) calibration, depends on what kind of machine you use, Terry. I use an eMac (G4) with an 'eMac' default setting > Displays > Color (tab). 32 bits is set by default for your machine as well. Only the G5 is 64 bits, I believe.
I have found I could not improve on the default calibration. |

64 bit is refering to the G5's processor. 32 bit is the color depth of the video card. Big difference. Plus your eMac's monitor is built in. If her monitor is an external and from a different manufacture, it will be different.
I use the default profile that came with my Sony and it works well. But depending on the light source that you are viewing the monitor under, it will need calibrated.
...and have I mentioned how HAPPY I am with my dual 2 ghz G5? ;D Photoshop CS is screaming now...

In that photo I can see a yellow spot on the lower right corner. Other than that, it's all good.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I have actually tried your G5 the other day and came up with a fairly consistent 2x + speed for most of what I tried. Wanna trade? ;-) |

NEVA! ;D
My old G4 was choking on my 11 megapixel files, the G5 handles them quite nicely. Plus I work with a lot of 200mb files for 40"x50" prints and high res files for product packaging. I can't wait unitl I can load the ram upto 8gig... |
