The 6 comments that I received for my very first entry were high praise (thanks so much to the folks who commented), but the votes weren't as glowing. Would anyone care to critique it to give me ideas on what can be improved? Thanks!

Also left this on the pic.
Composition is good. Focus, color, and sharpness are very good. I like the lighting also, with the shadows faint and not overpowering.
I do see some kind of artifact in the upper left. I would like to see the books more evenly spaced in the frame as it is set up. One corner of the book is out of frame on the left. Evenly spaced I mean throughout, like the top standing book an equal distance from the edges, etc. I think it is a bit better than 5.131 (is average), but the specific challenge may have affected that, with many people not getting the gist of it. |

5.1 for your first shot is pretty good :) I practically started off at around 4.5 and up .. but about the shot - It was a nice angle, sharp image, fits the challenge well. I think the color could use a little boost and I would like to see the whole background white, rather than dark shadows - especially the one in the top left corner. But great job! |

Thanks for that dacrazyrn. The artifact is actually flaws in the poster board I was using as a background. What I wouldn't have given to spot edit that out!!
On the right hand side, center, sharp eyes might also notice a fine yellow horizontal stripe. Those are dead pixels that my camera has developed (mentioned earlier elsewhere in the forums), it will be going back to Nikon after Christmas for repair. Would've liked to spot edit that as well!!
Thanks ScantyNebula for your comments too.

I'll be damned! There is a faint line. Not noticeable unless really looking for it on that shot, though. |

Don't see it but I do see what looks like chicken scratches on the background. Left side in the background looks like a "R" or a "K" and a "i" or "!".

faidoi, I think that is the artifact dacrazyrn is referring to. They aren't actually letters of any kind, just marks from being shuffled against walls, tables, etc. Time to replace my posterboard. Thanks all for your comments.
I seem to get conflicting opinions on the light/shadows- some people like it as is, others want it all white. How do you decide which to go with?
And had the subject placement been perfect and the artifact/chicken scratch not been in the shot, how much better would it have scored? In other words, do you feel that the subject matter and the shot itself were a creative and strong interpretation of "Simplicity"?
Thanks :-)

Ah well. Maybe some people just hate Winnie the Pooh.

I like the photo over all and I won't mention the upper left corner (LOL), but I think it might look more evenly spaced even if you had turned the book a wee bit so that it was facing forward a little more. I can't explain why, but somehow that portion to me is a little out of whack to the rest of the picture. I think turning it a hair would balance the shot more. Just MHO though. |
