I'll be the first to admit that selective desat ain't normally my cup of tea. I'll next offer that I learned A LOT about using layers and masks and stuff working up potential shots for this challenge. That alone was worth it. Finally, I'm only about a third of the way through voting, and yes, there are some gratuitous shots where the desat may look gimmicky, but I take into account that not everyone has done it before and perhaps they've learned a lot in giving it a try. But there are also some really awesome photographs, some that actually do make very good use of a "gimmick" technique to tell their story.

Yes, there was a lot of mediocrity... SO WHAT.
This is a learning site, the PRIZE-MONEY, is the knowledge gained.

Yes, what you said, Hopefully, everyone already knows.
I think I told my teammates that a photo should look good in color first. Selective-Deaturation is an enhancement technique, and of course no technique does "Magic".

Some techniques just don't work or are inappropriate for some photos.
Trial and Error, listen to comments, search and peruse the past, then practice, practice, is the name of the game.

So I hope all of you gave out a lot of helpful comments, if you voted.
Comments will go around and come backaround to you some day, too.

Percentage wise, I don't see any more mediocrity here than I do any other challenge.

I actually feel it should look good in B&W first.

maybe this helps a little to get over the trauma ;)

Personally... I've only voted on maybe 35% of the challenge and I have given out a ton of 'low' (low for me) scores... The pictures seem like they are pretty bad on their own, whether in color or B&W... and then be adding the selective desaturation they are actually throwing the picture even further out of wack... it seems like a lot of people over saturated the one thing left in color... it's painful to look at.
