Hey, I just saw your PM and this thread at the same time so I'll give what advice I can here...

The softbox will soften the light from you strobe considerably. Its a very favorable kind of light that's why its such a popular type of lighting. As for HOW to use it.....it depends on what kind of shot you want. I suggest starting with just the softbox on a strobe, pull it REALLY close to the subject (just out of frame) and adjust your exposure until you have a beautiful image. Now, add another light to fill the dark side, but not as strong as the softbox side....see the results and learn. Try the softox directly below your subject pointing upward, try it above pointing downward. And learn how that light looks. Keep moving the softbox's position and adjusting that stobes' strength.. you'll eventually see what the softbox CAN do.. Now how you use it will depend totally on the effect you wish to achieve. I can make a very attractive portrait using only one softbox, but can also do so with a 5 light set...... just depends on what look you need.
Long story short, the softbox is a tool like your camera. How you use it is up to you, but its a very nice tool to have.

Addition: google some lighting styles and positions and read lots. There is a TON of info out there.

What stobe do you have? Alien Bees (my strobes) have adjustment sliders on the back. If your strobes don't adjust strength, then you adjust by moving them closer and farther away.

Googling - try "studio lighting" you'll read for days. :)
