So I've gotten myself into kind of a dillema. I just recently got a new job and have decided to get myself a new lens. Originally I was dead set on the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L but now with the Canon rebates (the 2.8L non-IS doesn't have a rebate) I'm not so sure. For essentially the same price as the 2.8L, I can get BOTH the 70-200mm f/4L and the 17-40 f/4L. If I buy the f/4L, I can alway sell it later (next year or something) and upgrade to the f/2.8L for some more money. So what do all of you think? Go for the f/2.8L and not look back or get the two and sell the f/4L for the f/2.8L later? All I do know is that I really am starting to need a telephoto lens, the 28-75mm isn't cutting it anymore.
I am also open to any other options people throw out there, my budget is $1200 max. Thanks in advance guys.

the F4s are sharper and lighter than the 2.8s, although the 2.8s are pretty awesome.
I'd go with the 2 lenses, wait, I did just that! ;-) |

Thanks, scarbrd. Another question I just thought of is is the f/4 stable on a tripod without the tripod collar (so camera mounted to tripod, not lens)? Cause I really don't want to drop $150 (ripoff) on a collar for something I would replace within a year or two.

That really is a product of the quality of your tripod head...

I broke down and bought the tripod ring. While Drachoo is right about the tripod head, it gets very front heavy without the ring. I wouldn't trust the mount on the Rebel line to hold up to the stress.
The balance is way off too without the ring, making it hard to tweak the angle of the camera/lens to frame up the shot just right.
I recommend that you get the ring it you are going to do a lot of tripod/monopod work. |

Yeah I'm not so much worried about the tripod head (Manfrotto 728B tripod with built in head), I know that can take the weight, as I am about the camera body being able to handle it. I guess it's worth it. I'm not sure if I'll do a lot of tripod or monopod work so maybe I'll wait before buying one. Are there any generic collars that would be cheaper or does Canon stick you with the $150 tripod mount?
