I finally imported my folder hierarchy into lightroom, supposedly importing the information into the database, but leaving the files alone.

Now I see that in many cases where I had JPEGs or PSD files, Lightroom has "touched" the files, changing the date to the scan date and inserting some versioning information into the files, e.g., via binary compare, the difference is:

"Imported" version (in place):

[03][00][00][0a]3[00][00][08][14][00][10][00][03][00][00][00][00][00][00]BD8BIM[04]%[00][00][00][00][00][10][00][00][00][00][00][00][00][00][00][00][00][00][00][00][00][00]8BIM[04]$[00][00][00][00][1d]E[0a]

Wow, I would have never noticed that, but it is kinda weird that they would even bother. What benefit does it add to lightroom?

I've purchased Lightroom but have struggled with it's benefits unless it batch processing a family reunion, or constant lighting condition series of photos. With the new PS CS3 and bridge it has all the capabilities of processing. I dunno, not impressed with Lightroom at this time. Maybe with more experimenting with it I may change my mind. As far as changing the files, yup I want to contro that, imbedding information that I don't control could cause conflicts in other programs .. possibly?
