My first submission on a challenge, as a newbie to DPC(and a pretty lousy photographer, in need of improvement), I was thinking, isn't 'Shapes' a bit ambiguous?

The more ambigous - the more opportunity for creativity. Welcome to DPC.

Welcome! Just keep submitting pictures no matter what your first votes are. My first pictures were lousy. And a lot of my current ones too. But the comments I have received have been very helpful. Everyone here is great! They will help in any way.

Pccjrose is right. Creativity and good technique are the key. Look through the old challenges. Check what won and what didn't. It will help a lot.

Most important, have fun and keep submitting.

Will do.

I don't expect to get very far with my submissions, the main reason for entering the challenges is to get some useful feedback(I've selected the 'Critique' option on my submissions too). I was checking the old challenges, but I seem to get a mental block when trying to think of ideas... Some of the photos I've seen I would never have thought of, and my composition isn't terribly strong either.

A close up of the textured sails of the "Sydney Opera House", called "Pearly Sails".

Shame I took this image two months ago as I think it would have been a good entry for "Shapes" challenge.

With the size of some of these challenges, I would not expect too many comments. Most middle of the road entries tend to only get a couple of comments.

I understand that, but every little helps.

I was just curious how people are taking "shapes" into their pictures. I looked at the past Shapes challenges & they both had descriptions "Make the shape of the object you're photographing the most important aspect of your photo", and this challenge does not say that. Not sure about other people, but this to me takes on something different than just "shapes". For shapes, I would find circles, diamonds, hearts and things in objects, but to make the shape the main subject could be something entirely different. Just curious what other people thought of when they hear shapes, not sure if I'm entering for sure, but I want to stay away from the DNMC comments :)

Well, quite. I had to look back at the previous shapes challenge to get an idea of the description, because, as I said previously 'shapes' could mean anything.

I was wondering whether it needed to be specifically geometric, or 'conventional' shapes as we know them.
