If there is anybody out there that likes Stout or Porter (and I mean really dark), then I highly, highly recommend you check out this limited offering by Stone Brewery...

Stone Brewery Imperial Russian Stout

It only comes in 22 oz bottles and runs about $6 a bottle, but I'm really enjoying it.

That is just plain mean.

It's not available in Oklahoma. Damn 3.2 limit.

::Gingerly takes a sip...instantly frightened at the hairs beginning to sprout on her chest...drops the glass with an embarrassing CRASH...YIKES!!!::

Much prefer the lighter stuff...

I always drink Yuengling Porter (4.13 alcohol) and Troeggs Trogenator (8 alcohol)

Sounds good - but I tend to buy beers that are made closer to me - Beer tends not to travel very well. I will stick with Harpoon, Sam Adams, and other New England micros. When I get out west, I will have to check it out on tap...

I would have to label myself an experienced beer drinker. I belong to awebsite to catalog what I drink and I went ot a beerfest (belgian) in Boston in late February. If you haven't done so already- check out BEERADVOCATE.Com- great reviews, discussions, threads and beer trading. Kind of like the dpchallenge of beer.

At the Belgian fest Stone Brewery was present, with 3-4 different style brews. When it comes to porter and stout, I think the "stormking" stout is the hoppiest(by Victory in PA)- for those who like an IPA once in a while; We have a terrific Imperial Stout and Porter from Hooker brewery in Connecticut; Personally I dig the Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout and Taddy Porter; I like Young's Double Chocolate stout(a milk stout) and For power, strength and smoothness, Brooklyn Brewery makes a fantastic Black Chocolate stout.(8% +) Oh yeah, and Rogue's Chocolate Stout is really excellent as well.

DR. -I just realized your across the country- PM me an Address and I'll shoot you out some local Imperial stout.

Stone Brewery makes some great beers, unfortunately the distribution is somewhat limited. I can't get their offerings where I live, but I was in Nashville on business and had a couple "Arrogant Bastards" (another one of their products), and it was absolutely terrific. I would love to try thier "Double Bastard" which they claim to be "Arrogant Bastard's" evil big-brother.

I like the extreme IPA's from stone- If you get a chance, the oak aged arrogant bastard is quite nice; but then again- why would you need more than Dogfish head 60-90 or 120 minute IPA. all fantastic!

i never knew that some states limit that. that's just downright cruel.

I have to say that there are some fine brews from here in VT. Magic Hat has some great porters as does Trout River. They make a chocolate oatmeal porter that is to die for.

Well, what else would you expect from a state that finally legalized tattooing within the past year?

Can you say belt buckle of the bible belt??

Hey Doc, I'm a self professed beer snob. I'll definately add this to the list I give our local 'packie who order this stuff in for us. Looks divine...

Have you tried anything from Alaskan Brewery? I'm in love with thier Summer Ale though I have a hard time getting my hands on it. :)

Have to back up cryan on that statement too, VT is full of good micro's, and Longtrail Blackberry Wheat reminds me of home.

Of course I live in walking distance (not an exaggeration) to The Wachusett Brewing Company and they sell Growlers of Blueberry Ale if you walk into the brewery for you to carry out.

Ha! Going on a beer run today! I agree with Paul on the Young's Double Chocolate and normally do mainstream Guinness. (Boring and cheap, lol!) But this intrigues me. I'm going to make a list of the suggestions here and hit the store later today. LUV my dark, heavy beers.

Will check in later...if I'm able, lol! Hopefully I can find it! :P

Bleh! Yuengling sucks. Troeg's on the other hand rocks.

Magic Hat has a Mystery Beer right now that is a Chocolate Stout and it's excellent. Brooklyn Brewery makes good stouts too. Sigh, I need a beer for breakfast.

Yeungling happens to be, my opinion, the best non-micro brew American beer there is.

Longtrail also makes a smokehouse porter that pours like mud. OMG that is good stuff.
05/19/2007 11:39:43 AM · #21
The only real microbrew that I know of around here is Boulevard
05/19/2007 11:49:36 AM · #22
I'm going to have to search out some of these suggestions. Personally I really don't like IPA. My least favorite type of beer. I'm more the lager, porter, stout type of guy.

To me it tastes no different that Bud or Miller, watery and flavorless. According to ratebeer.com the highest rated is a 3.12.

Going to a Brewfest in Connecticut today. :)

That said, going to share one of my most favorite breweries. The stuff they make is unbelievable. It's all live beer (still fermenting in the bottle so it's much fresher).

//www.globalbeer.com/body_pages/pages-breweries/BrVanSteenberge.html

Mind you, it's a bit pricey with a 6-pack sampler usually going for $15-$20.

Though my wife and I both like Sam Adams "Summer Ale". And I am quite fond of nice dryer stouts and porters.

:)
