I am currently waiting for the UPS driver to drop off a hood from B&H for one of my lenses right now.

Just amazing - what a nice thing to do for folks who don't want to spend the money. Best comment left on the site: "OK, so where's the website for cutout D200's, 18-200VR's, etc?"

hoods block sun flares (which can be artistic)
hoods block light that kills contrast (no saving an image like this)
hoods are a mechanical protection against bumping things and damaging the front element
hoods are something you pay extra for with most canon lenses (cheap b@st..)
hoods are a PITA if use a belt system or change lenses often as now each change requires 'assembly' of the lens
hoods a PITA if you use an expodisc, PL filters, cokin filters, etc
