I know it's a bit early for this, but today is the last day of Southwest's $99 sale, so I'm trying to plan a trip to the Northeast now to see autumn colors. I've researched this a bit and it seems like mid-October is the best time to visit. Does this sound right? Any recommendations for particularly good places to visit during this trip? Thanks!

Grand Autumn New England special tours to view the fall display are bookable for 11 day stints starting at departure dates available only from the 19th of September to the 11th of October for 2007.
At this site //www.tauck.com/index.php?cPath=tours/usa-tours/new-england-travel/fall-foliage-tour-gr-2007/gr-date-availability&calMonth=09&calYear=2007&previous=1188662400&
Of course the actual turning of the leaves will depend on the weather at that time and I dunno if you are going to get a very good weather forcast anywhere for 4 to 5 months in the future. Perhaps your best guess target would be in the middle of the dates above ?
I hope this helps ...

Yes, I know there is a lot of flexibility in that schedule, and it actualy looks like a particularly warm season this year. I'm just trying to arrive as close to the middle of the expected fall color season as possible so that I can be sure to see something. According to that link, the tour company is expecting it to be a bit earlier than I was thinking. Does that seem right to people in the area?

It depends. I've been in Maine mid-October and there wasn't much turning at that point.
What types of things do you want to shoot? Vermont is beautiful, Maine is a favorite of mine...the Finger Lakes here in NY are great if you like waterfalls. The northeast is a big area...what are you looking for?

Waterfalls would be great with turning leaves and I'd love to shoot some covered bridges and maybe drive through Amish country. Pretty much everything the Northeast is famous for in the fall.

I live out here in the northeast. If you end up out here around early to mid October you should end up finding several areas that have great color. The earlier you come, the farther north you will need to go. Typically, the colors peak up in northern NH, VT in the first 10 days of October and in southern VT/NH around the 10th to the 20th.
It is very dependent on weather - how cold, how much rain, etc - but that is pretty typical. If you want further info about dates, try:
VT Foliage
If you come, I'll probably 'see' you up there - I always go up in October to VT |
