Great shots Deb. By the time your tour is over, you will have a great photo library.

Jelena, it looks like you had a blast!!

Kuwait doesn't look like a pleasant environment for humans but there is a beauty in the starkness.

BUT...at least its doing better than my first challenge!

My fifth challenge was my first 5+ challenge.

My June Free Study was a 4.2966 and it looks like my Children's toy is goiung to come in under 5 as well.

You're doing fine!

If you want more of a camera than the D40, then go for it, but the D40 *WILL* use the lenses that the D80 uses. If you use some of the older lenses, you will lose some of the automatic features, but in reality, and certainly from my findings, there's no good reason not to stick and stay with the current iteration of fabulous lenses that Nikon makes specifically for their DSLRs.

If you want the D80 or the D200, fine, but don't pass up on a terrific little camera because of the off chance that you may get a super deal on an older lens. The D80 is definitely is larger than the D40, and the D200 even moreso, so if size does matter, keep the D40/D40x on the roster. As I stated yesterday, I wouldn't buy the D40x over the D40 simply because I don't see the need. Your money is better off spent on the differential between Nikon and off-brand lenses IMO.

No old lenses lurking around...I am starting from scratch on a DSLR. Lord help me but this is an EXPENSIVE hobby!

I use all Pentax lenses, and every M42 lens ever made using the adapter. I have Zeiss, Pentax, Praktika all in M42, next I want Leica!!

Before when I said Nikon has "one" of the best backwards lens compatibility, it is only second to Pentax. Pentax is the king in that regard.

Steve, could you share why you own so many lenses? I now own 3 that cover the range of 10-200mm, plus a 1.4 teleconverter, so it's really 10-280.

I can understand adding a macro at some point, even in a couple of focal lengths. And the fisheye is fun. And maybe a super telephoto if I ever win the lottery. Beyond that, there's the tilt-shift lens.

Are those the kinds of things you're talking about? If not, what other specialty uses do you get with the lenses you mentioned? Maybe I'm misreading, but it sounds like you might have dozens.

Thanks!

When he assembles them all together, he can make super-mega-ultra-lens, which lets him take pictures of Voltron!

I can't speak for Steve, but for me, owning different lenses (and I don't own the good stuff, for the most part) is just to have something to play with. I have an "Underground" brand 80-200; I have a 28-80 non-brand that I used before I got my Nikon AF 18-55; I have a Nikon MF AI-S 1.4 50mm; I just got the Zeiss I've posted about already, and with it came a Domo (or something like that, I didn't bring it here to Germany with me) 50mm. I'll play with that, too (though it is also M42 mount, and won't focus to infinity). I have a two and a three times converter (I don't use the three, it didn't fit right on my old F55, I'm not putting it anywhere near my D50).

Why different lenses? Why am I likely to continue to buy lenses, both the good stuff when I have the cash and the off-brand, weird, supposedly bad stuff anytime I can find it?

The camera feels and acts differently with different lenses on it. Using manual lenses -- and the Zeiss I have to use in manual aperture mode, switching to full aperture if I want to get a focus reading -- puts some of my energy back into the technique, the thought process. I can't shoot as quickly (though I am getting to where I can still shoot pretty quickly), and the end result looks different from what I get with my AF Nikon lenses (even if I used them in manual mode). It's just, well, different.

What I hope in the future is that I'll be able to get some really good prime MF lenses that I would never be able to afford in AF versions. That's a more direct reason for having lots of different glass (lots of different prime lenses), but other than that, and when buying off-brand, it's just playing.

And I do like to play :)

Best,

Rob

No, I don't have dozens :) But just a quick glance I can see a 28mm, a 50mm, a 70-140 and a 70-210 with M42 mount, plus two converters, both 2x. These have just been aquired from friends and a couple from ebay. Plus I have the 18-55 kit lens and the Tamron 70-300. I haven't tried them all yet, but they are here for experimenting later.

These are not lenses that I would choose and use regularly, but they came my way and will be used sometime. I don't really have any dream lens at the mo, as I seem to beable to cover what I want with what I have.

I've got two comments telling me the picture should be bigger. Is that 640 pixel thing a strict rule, or can you waive it you think it might benefit the picture?

Challenge entries are normally restricted to 640x640, but occasionally they let us use 720x720.

Portfolio images are limited to 800x800.

If you upload something larger for your portfolio, DPC will "helpfully" resize it for you, leaving you with whatever results come out of its photo-squishing software.

Seems to me if you think your photo would look great as a postage stamp, make it that size. I recently received a comment that I needed to recompose my photo, I wrote a PM back and told him that sometimes photos where just taken for fun.

I was sort of tongue in cheek there, actually. The picture's already 640 pixels, so there's not a whole lot I can do about making it bigger :)

Ooh, just logged in and found lots of new 'yes' votes on JPG. Thanks guys :)

I was wondering, since there's so many of us, should we make the "top score comments on the rest" per challenge? While I might not ever be one of those top scores, recent weeks have shown lots of us participating. Thoughts? I can update my scripts to do this starting with Tuesday's results (or amend the results from tonight once I have the code written).

I think that's a good idea. Commenting on all the entries for a whole week is becoming quite a severe punishment (not that I've ever had to do it).

Clarification, please?

You mean per challenge instead of for the week?

I still think there should only be one Momentary Lapse of Sucking award per week, but we can ease the punishment to only having to comment on photos in the same challenge as the high-scoring photo.

Yeah, I can pick out the highest Team Suck score for each challenge, praise that person publicly in the results, and they could comment on the other pictures in that challenge in which they excelled. I can still pick out the "best score of the week" like I do now, but maybe they can write a poem, or pick a "Team Suck Weekly Free Study Thingy" topic.

Well you learn something new every day - I didn't even know such a punishment existed!

anyone who has an opinion on this, please chime in and we can at least have the semblance of democracy in this constitutional monarchy....
