Cats are on their way to spend a month and a half with my friend Raina in Heidelberg. When my other friend gets a place to live and gets settled, she'll take over catsitting duties. I'm nearly packed, except for the electronics and the little things, and have managed to get everything into a small backpack. And two very large rolling duffle bags. (What, you thought I could pack for six months in a backpack??) I leave this weekend. I shall check in when I get a chance and let you all know just how hot it is.

You may wish to park me in Team Zombie's space for awhile. I do have one in Nightmare (score isn't a nightmare but isn't all that great, either). I don't currently have anything for the upcoming challenges and seriously doubt I'll get anything. But you never know!

Oh shoot - I missed this and you may be gone already. Stay in Hoover!

Best of luck to you. Wishing you a safe journey and a secret hiding place for an air conditioner.

Peeking in! Haven't made it very far yet. The USO lounge here has wireless access. And it's currently crawling with people in uniform. Whoda'thunkit? We gots Marines, Air Force, Army, Navy, and one guy who's identifying tape says DA CIVLIAN. I thought it was kinda funny, but I suspect it means Department of the Army Civilian. Everyone wears uniforms downrange.

Anyway, I'm checked in, they promised not to lose my luggage, and now we wait for three hours for the flight. We like to be prpeared. Like Boy Scouts only bigger kids. And they make you put all your knives and firearms in the checked luggage. :-)

More later!

Heh. Like most of Don's offerings, that one's a little difficult to implement. Look at a book and explain how you'd remove only the odd pages. :)

First impression of Kuwait (and apologies to those who may live here) but this is the ugliest, most barren, inhospitable place I've ever been. Makes west Texas look National Geographic worthy. Can't say I'm overjoyed, but probably more because of the fact cameras are prohibited on all installations and internet access is limited to 30 minutes at a time at the library, and is quite slow.

But other than that, and no sleep last night at all, I'm good!

Deb, look at the positive, you can work on your tan. : ) I hope you start to find at least a few positives,
LOL you will probably come out of this a PS guru that can turn a grain of sand into a Icelandic scene complete with northern lights.
In honesty here is wishing things get much better for you.

Just wanted to check in and let you all know why i havn't been on much lately. i would like to share this photo with you guys. This is a photo of mom feeding dad one of the last meals he has been able to eat on the 4th of July. You cant see it in the photo but she is in a wheelchair and she has been his full time caregiver, for the past 4 yrs he has been in bed unable to setup or even turn himself over. She has been by him and taken care of his every need the entire time. If this isn't true love and devotion i don't know what is. They have been together for 62 yrs. He went into a coma on the morning of the 13th and cant even take water so he wont be with us much longer.

David, I got a few tears in my eyes when reading your post. What a beautiful thing to spend such a long and devoted life together. I am very sorry that your dad went into a coma :-( Sending all my positive thoughts your way.

Amazing that so many wars have been fought over places like this. I'm glad you have made it safely, and I'm glad you're not in Iraq. I'm sure the time will speed by -- after all, the older we get the faster it goes. (Oops, not saying that you are old -- speaking more for myself).

Griz, I'll keep you and your parents in my thoughts. That was a very touching photo. If I can help in any way, please let me know.

Deb ... you also are in my thoughts a lot. I hope things improve drastically. I agree, you'll probably turn into an even better PS pro.

Lesson learned - when you type a big long post, be sure to copy it before hitting "Post", just in case the machine has timed out or lost connection while you were typing... :-)

Day 2 - still one of the most unsightly locations in the world, but it does have fun people and my Pod is air conditioned. Don't know about becoming a PS guru. Gotta buy a chair first so I have something to sit on in my pod to work on my laptop. I did bring a few folders of stuff I need to edit.

David, my heart goes out to you, and though it may not seem this way now, you and your family are probably some of the luckiest, most blessed people I know - the love displayed in your photograph and your comments is a rare and wonderful thing that unfortunately not everyone gets to experience. I do thank you for sharing with us.

David ( griz210), here's hoping things go as smoothly as they can in such circumstances, for everyone involved, and that happy memories make the impending loss less miserable. I just want to say, as well, though, that it's a wonderful photo, not for technical reasons, but because it takes something most people try to forget ("remember them when they were healthy" people always say) and includes it not as a moment of sadness, but one that shows the deep and profound bond between two human beings. If more people in the world could love like this, fewer people like Deb would have to make trips to sandy places.

Deb, glad you're first steps went safely and as expected, and that some minimal comfort attends you there. The offer stands; when you find you've forgotten something, or miss something, let us know; I'm sure you'll have a pod-full of whatever it is before you can blink.

Best,

Rob

P.S. If you type a post, and press "post" and suddenly you lose internet, or get a time-out error, and you have that essentially blank page, leave it there. Open another browser window (or in Firefox another tab works, too) and wait until you can get DPC back. Then, check the thread to make sure your post wasn't, well, posted, and if it wasn't, go back to the original window and hit "refresh" (F5 on a windows computer). A little dialogue should pop up saying, "This page has post data that will be resent" (or something like that). Hit "okay" and your post should go up! Doesn't always work, but I'm pretty sure I've done it on DPC before ...

Thanks for keeping us up to date Deb - I look forward to reading your stories.

Today's lesson - the internet here is interminably sloooowwww..... I need to take an online course to get a driver's license here and it comes up at about one page every 12 minutes. I may finish the course by the time I need to leave.

I did go take the written test offered by the Army. I learned one very important thing - try to avoid, at any and all costs, driving in Kuwait. They have rules, but no one follows them at all. Stop signs are "suggestions"; lanes are optional; passing can be done anywhere at any time; no driving tests are required and males can get a license at any age and just go drive.

I also learned (and not entirely sure of the validity) that all males born in Kuwait get $100,000 a MONTH for just being alive. This could explain why people live here. Well, why the males live here at any rate. All labor is pretty much contracted out to non-Kuwaitis.

And I figure my next screen should be up any time now for my online course... :-)

Hi all

Wow, Deb...Kuwait...say hi to any Canucks you see for me, maybe they'll give you a Timmy's! It's great to read your posts, please keep them coming, it's an education for all of us who only see where you are right now on the news...and know one of our friends is there. Now I know how military families feel.

David, my heart goes out to you. What an amazing relationship, and what a touching story and photo.

Now the important stuff ;-) Dichotomy really tanked, but once I bothered to actually look at my lens (the A700 has an automatic lens-y door thingy that shuts whenever you turn it off) I realized I had all kinds of crud on it. Dang. However I did remove said crud and get a decent pic for Nightmares, which is doing well, should end up on home page. Don't know if it'll top 6, though it was at 5.89 Saturday afternoon.

Hey guys!
Just quickly checking in - I spent the last 2 weeks far from civilisation, this is the first time I've had internet access. Madagascar is amazing, and I have loads of pictures of lemurs, chameleons and cute african children to sift through when I get home... I love lemurs!

Woo! I'm looking forward to seeing your shots from this trip. Maybe you'll luck out and we'll have a lemur challenge next week.

I don't know much about Kuwait, but that is economically, politically and mathematically impossible... unless you're talking about some kind of teeny Kuwaiti dollar.

Hehe, fingers crossed. I've got roughly a thousand lemur pictures on an external hard drive waiting to be sorted through... My new camera is being used extensively, I take it for walks all the time here.
