Kashi, I meant cups of the variety meyers mentioned, nothing I'd want to drink out of!

And Noraneko, I'll make you a deal: you let me shoot YOU in a slinky dress with stilettos and fishnets, and you can do the same. Even better, krnodil, nikonjeb, and theSaj can join us, and my wife can shoot all of us. :)

boy, this is going to be an interesting Saturday outing in a couple of weeks!

Just visited your portfolio, and left you some comments, but had to add this one here, as I think it is so differant, and was so surprised to see the thumbnail, and then what it was like when opened, to a larger format. Definately quite surprised.....

I really did think it was a bird flying.....

I think I shall have to seek out this palm wine you speak of :)
And, um, I'm 6' tall, I take it that's considered tall everywhere on the island? In Thailand I was about double the size of the lovely petite Thai ladies, I can so see it happening again...

...Oh, anyone know what the situation is with internet access there? I'll be looking for ways to submit fluffy lemur pictures to as many challenges as possible :p

cup's not scary at all, promise. been using one for over a year, and i love it. ok, maybe love is a bit strong, but i definitely appreciate it a great deal.

you will be very, very tall. but that will probably make you very popular.

palm wine is a rural drink, you may not find it in towns or cities, probably only in villages.

i'm sure you can get internet in the city, very likely in the swankier hotels, but it may be very expensive. the lonely planet website has a good forum, with some very helpful threads on almost anywhere in the world.

do you speak french at all?

I gotta say, it would've been interesting to sometime kiss a woman even close to my height. My tallest girlfriend ever was 4" shorter than I am, and Lindsay's 8" shorter. That's 10cm and 20cm to those of you in countries with sane measurement systems. ;)

I'm with Jeff, never dated anyone even near my height; my wife (Meike) is 6" shorter than I am (about 15 cm), and I've not dated anyone taller than her. No one I dated ever wore serious heels, even with the height difference. And I've never worn fishnets (or stockings of any kind).

I think that catches me up here (though I fear for the thread following the DC meetup).

Best,

Rob

Catherine,
Puuuuuhlease be careful at the DC gettogether. Why do you think I fell in DC (with Jeffrey there)?
Instead of looking at the dangerous pavement I was so enthralled with the fishnets and stilettos!!!! Unfortunately I tumbled and didn't get the shot that would have delighted everyone.

Hahahahaha! Good advice! And Jeffrey is a common factor here...;-)

PWL is at 5.95 or so, was at 5.97 earlier today. F***** trolls!

Just got in for Candid, a typical boring snaffles shot sure to sink into the 4.8 quagmire...

Bye now gotta go catch supper!

It's been a nice laid back weekend, so I thought I'd try to do proper daylight portraits for the first time in my life. Any feedback on them would be much appreciated. They're very quick edits - what I'm really interested in is whether the lighting looks ok or not...

Hi guys! Long time no speak! I'll have my internet connection back on Monday. Just stopping in my cousins to have a peek at scores and let anyone know who maybe missed me even a little. I spent a couple days in the hospital this week (Monday & Tuesday). I now have lots of follow up appointments with some specialists.

So sorry to hear about your medical problems, Kelli. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

Ha, you taller guys missed out! Back in the day I dated two women -- not at the same time -- who were at least my height (one was just a bit taller). The problem both of them had was being seen in public with a boyfriend who was shorter than them! I guess you can say I didn't measure up :P

Left you some lengthy comments with suggestions. :) They're both great as snapshots, but with some processing, I think both could gain quite a bit of impact.

Thanks for the feedback! :) Most educational.
And thank you meyers and jerseygenie too!

I think I'll make it a mission for this year to actually get decent at portrait shots - I really like getting people to pose for me anyway :)

I did notice my photo shoots are getting longer and longer, but last night's one was actually ridiculous :)
7 hours, 620 photos, strange variety of things all involving fire. It was so much fun!

I predict your Madagascar trip will be 1 continuous photo shoot.

Jeffrey, I'm just afraid you'll look better in the stilettos and fishnets than I do! But bring it, I say! And the idea of your wife shooting all of us dressed up like that? Superb!
And Jeanne, I'll be extra careful. Jeffrey must have some scary powers, LOL. Course there won't be much ice this time of year, thankfully!

Hey Team Suckers! A couple of tidbits for you... did you know that Windex (or generic equivalent in this case) kills ants on contact? I didn't, but I do now! This is what happens when you don't have bug spray and discover the ants are trying to invade via the back door.

The other tidbit - if you find yourself playing with Photoshop and want to try something new, go here:
Cross processing tutorial

I'd used this before but lost it somewhere on my hard drives (I think), so I went looking for it again today. If at all possible, try to have both the video up and a practice project at the same time. Kind of a fun thing to do.

Here's a before and after:

Oh, and I added some steps - when he uses new layers to do vignetting and dodging/burning, I reduced the strength of the brushes a bit, then added Gaussian blur to the layer itself to smooth out the brush stroke edges.

Thanks Melethia... I LOVE tutorials!! I may be dumb, but I haven't found one on how to fix blown highlights... anywho...Thanks again!

Oh, and a random photography rant - we ended up discussing it last night, and I thought about it a lot recently...

Nick is my favourite model to work with, because we have a shared obsession with all things fire related (except he's worse than me. he makes fireworks, fire sculptures, fire toys etc. for performances - it's his life really). And he was saying last night that he likes working with me because I can do the fire justice (amazingly flattering. especially coming from him :) ) - technical skill is necessary, but insufficient, you need to be able to tap into a passion and see the beauty/meaning in something in order to actually photograph it well.

And it's true that people seem to really excel at photography when they are photographing things they love. kashi's kids photos or levyj413's daughters come to mind as an example immediately, but there are lots of others with people being able to tap into a particular style, or a particular subject matter (food, eagles, whatever).

Which makes you wonder what it is we're doing really. The model of photography as simple representation seems obviously false to anyone who ever spent any length of time doing it. Photography as creation, well... With painting or writing, while arguably people put in bits of the world and themselves into their creations, this isn't a necessary thing - it could be entirely abstract, and coming entirely from your head. Photography, on the other hand, is by its very nature tied to the world.

So as far as I can tell, this is how it works: photographers look for certain aesthetics, and have at their disposal an array of colours, shapes, archetypes, references, aesthetic and emotional responses, which enable them to use many different layers of meaning. And people then tap into things they like and things that drive them (which could be anything. Could be a feeling of connection to nature. Could be women wearing PVC.), and look for ways of capturing their essence. And you look for that meaning in the world, but in the process you also take control of the world and create the meaning you went out to find in it.

Well, that, or you could just snap away :) (see what hanging out with philosophers does to you? I can't even take a photo without then writing a 10 page essay discussing the underlying concepts of doing so. Bloody philosophers, honestly.)

Jelena - marvelously astute and all so very true! An excellent random rant, though not really a rant - more of an observation.

Sierra - blown highlights are, well, blown. Not much you can do about them though there are ways to lessen the effect to some extent. Try black and white to start - see if it diminishes the effect a bit. Try a different crop if there's a particularly annoying section of blown highlights (generally a sky in a lot of instances.) Best defense, though, is a good offense. I'm guilty as the next guy for letting my camera set the exposure. In situations where you think the highlights may be strong, set the camera yourself to a half or more stop below what the camera is telling you. And if all else fails, process the hell out of it and turn it into a very high contrast shot. :-)
