The latest in the saga of Deb's Summer Vacation:
First, many thanks for all the encouraging PMs! I realize that I'm being pretty much of a wimp about all of this. I'm old, I'm set in my ways, I don't like change or uncertainty. I need to get over it and expand my horizons. Everyone I work with has done their part and I need to do mine. Dare I say I'm almost kinda excited about it.
I'm working to send myself downrange, as it's called, for six months with my current organization. This essentially, with luck and lots of paperwork, gets me off "the list" for other jobs of longer duration and lets me keep contributing to the people I just came to work for less than a year ago. I'll have a bit more input into what I'll be doing, and a bit more say in where I go, though I may try to get to quite a few places (might as well see the world while I'm there).
I'm also working to see if one of our new folks wants to share my house. This will save her a lot of hassles and time, and I get a built-in cat- and house-watcher. I haven't met her yet, and I'm not a roommate kinda person, but as I said above, maybe I need to expand my horizons a bit.
The big uncertainty in all of the above is whether or not the "home office" can still pull me back and send me on one of the longer jobs even though I'm already down there. But I'll just have to take that chance!
So if all goes as planned, I'll head down mid-July (nice time of year, I hear) and be back by the end of January. I'll get internet access, I'm fairly sure, but don't know if I can get to here from there (blocked sites and all). Still have a month to hang out and pester you guys regardless. :-) |

You're not a wimp.. stuff like this seems like it's a really big deal, and hard to adjust to. |

Ah, but I really am a wimp. And a geek. And darn proud of both! :-) But think of the stories I'll be able to tell. And the fact that I probably won't think of San Antonio as "hot" after this either. AND the fact I don't have to buy any summer shoes! (Instead, I have a brand new lovely pair of sand-colored boots to take with me. Who could ask for more?) |

Be sure to keep a journal during your summer vacation. You're one of the best storytellers that we have. |

Considering your profession, I'd hardly call you a wimp. You are a brave and courageous soul, going many places that very few Americans will ever see. Kudos to you!

Originally posted by sherpet: It is a very miserable wet day here, at the "Sunshine Coast", where we live, but boy do we need this rain..... The answer to that question is "YES", as we are in a severe drought at the moment, throughout Queensland, and most of Australia is also struggling with drought conditions. |
It's also very wet today in the "Sunshine State" (Florida) where I live. The drought was severe this year, but the rainy season has arrived right on schedule and is living up to its name big time.
BTW, here is a photo taken in a marsh during the height of the drought. I walked out on the floor of the marsh a fair distance to get the shot. (Most of the gators had headed for a canal which still had a little deeper water.)

Nice photo and glad to hear that "most" of the gators headed to deeper water, LOL. Am especially glad that the remaining "few" didn't decide you looked tasty :-) |

Deb,
Is there any way that Larus could take your place? He's young and strong and needs a break from the cold weather. Just think what a coup it would be to bring Iceland into the Coalition! |

In my fantasies, Superman brings in glaciers from somewhere in outer space and drops these in strategic places in the "hot" areas. It becomes too damn cold to fight. |

Deb its good to hear you Vacation plans are looking up. Deb, you are an amzing person and very brave soul to do what you do (even if I don;t know precisely what you do, but I can imagine) You are in no way at all a wimp or geek. I hve tremendous respect for you as both a photographer and a persn willing to lay down their life for their country. |

Deb, you do sound a bit better with it all; some things take time to sink in, and you've got a good head on your shoulders. I hope it all works out the way you want it to in the end. I'll keep my thumb pressed for those months, that's for sure.
Best of luck,
Rob |

You know, I think that is a most excellent idea! The down side would be he could still win ribbons with pictures of sand.
I do plan to take my camera. Just have to be careful when and where I use it so it's not mistaken as a weapon by someone who hasn't had enough sleep or something. :-)
And Jeanne, a 5.3 doesn't suck. Glad to see you back in the challenges! |

Okay, Don, I literally just spit food out when I read this it made me laugh so hard. Not so much about the Larus part (though it would certainly help the DPL team to which Deb, Jeffrey and I belong if he went somewhere without a camera for the next few months) but the part about the coalition. What beautiful and poetic irony you do write, my friend. |

Sherpet, my Girl Scout troop talked about Australia's drought at this year's "Thinking Day." Each troop picked a country and a major problem.
We gave out crackers with no water to give people some sense of what it's like not to have enough water.
