The local zoo's gift shop wants to use my images for it's postcards. They want about 16 to 20 different images. It is not a big gift shop and I suspect their yearly post card sales are minimal. I am thinking 10 dollars an image for the non-exclusive rights to for a year (so $160 to $200 annual) . I already have taken the images and it will just be a matter of meeting with them and making the selections. For that price I would also expect to have my name listed on the postcard as the photographer.

Comments? Suggestions?

ask them what their budget for images is, and decide if that is worth it to you. if it is, take it. if not, suggest something a wee bit higher (that would be acceptable to you), and see if they can stretch. if they can't, then decide whether or not you can justify it.

next chance you get, stop by the gift shop and purchase a couple cards so you can have ready reference as to what type of credit they give.

this is not something you do as much for money as you do for credit and exposure. hope it all works out!

I agree that the photo credit and possible referrals are probably worth more than the cash.

Another approach you can use if their budget is below what you want (unlikely if you're considering $10/image) is to invoice for the higher amount, and then apply a "first-time customer discount" of enough to bring it down to their price -- then convince them to budget more next year : )

If their budget is really low, maybe you could "barter" free passes to the zoo or something. Or even arrange to sell prints, as well.

That's a really good idea -- see if they'll sell framed enlargements on consignment or something ... you could probably charge a lot for an 8x10 or 11x14.

Great ideas!!! I like the idea of putting a larger picture on co-sign or such....
