Hi
First post here!

I have tried voting for photos, at som point I'll get enought time and courage to try entering some!

My normal rules for voting go along the lines of considering three things.

1 Would I be proud of this photo if it was me that had taken it?
2 Does it fit the theme naturally, or is it a question of the title being used to explain why it fits the theme?
3 and (potentially annoying a lot of people) are the post processing effects (especially monochrome) being done to enhance the photo, or are they a desperate attempt to make a boring foto arty?.

But for this challenge I found that these rules don't work. Judging the entries has been really hard. There are some good photos that just don't work as record covers, for example they need to be square(ish). But there are other entrys that are excellent album covers even though the photos are less than perfect. So for this challenge I had to devise a new rule set. I ended up with, would I pick this album up in a shop to see what was on the back?
I would be interested to hear how other people judged this challenge.

My voting for this challenge has been a little different. My first pass is just to see how much I'm "sold" on the image looking like it could really be an album (or CD) cover. How convincing is it as a cover art for a piece of fictitious music?? After that, I do my usual asthetic (subjective) assessment of the photography and then finally (for this challenge) the use of text. It's a fun challenge to look at. The original Album cover challenge was right around the time I got active on the site, so this is a little nostalgic for me too.

Since this is a photography site I vote on the photo first and everything else 2nd (font, layout, etc). If it has a great CD layout but is a poor photo, I will not give it high marks. Of course we are all free to vote however we like, if you are happy with the way you are voting, that's fine.

Unless you don't vote my submissions highly...then I'm not ok with it. :P

My only issue is that I don't think the shape of the image should matter one bit. This is the age of Internet music and downloadable files. Square, rectangular, who cares?

The challenge rules say an "album cover"" Prehaps it's just my age showing :-) For me a album means a bit of black plastic 12" in diameter

vistisen,
Although my criteria may not match yours, I agree with your general point. Voting on instinct, I find I'm judging the entries differently than usual.

What a wonderful challenge to vote! I'm blown away by the creativity. I did vote differently in this challenge - I tended to take into account whether I could "see" it as a CD or album cover, to include the whole presentation, not just the picture. Challenges like this one once in awhile allow us to see what can be done with a picture, other than just shove it into our online portfolios, and still have it be a picture. Kinda cool, if you ask me!

I think this has also pointed out to us that we all need to read the rules properly every time (this time regarding text) as there are many that dont have text but could have done a lot better with it.
