I agree. I think he should give it a shot. Then upload the shots here and let us critique.

Disregarding the expression, the agency would probably go with this style over the other shots -
Commercial is about normal people doing normal things. The images should come off natural.
This one's too stiff and artificial -
Plus I don't see too many headshots on paper backgrounds in commercial portfolios (well, at least not ones that stylistically clash like this).

But not all portraits are commercially viable headshots. When dealing with agency work, that distinction needs to be made. |
maybe could you give an example or each so i know the difference? |
Go to the agency and look at portfolios and comp cards. That would give you the best idea of the look they're aiming for.

For cheap lights grab some second-hand flash units off eBay, then use them off-camera. Easiest way is to get an optical trigger and trigger them with the built-in flash. The is a great resource for off-camera lighting, Strobist. |

you need an open garage door, a bounce/reflector card, and a camera
I'll post the link to the guy that does this in LA for the beautiful people, they just come over to his house and he shoots in his garage. The link is at my office - I'll post it when I get there. |

here it is:
Kevin Major Howard
He's the best and uses very minimal lighting techniques. There's a video on his sight of his set-up.
