Come to think of it, here's the link that started my stumbling around:

StumbleUpon

Are they just pictures that are tweeked to give a smaller DOF? Some of them are quite convincing...I had to take a few looks, maybe even a few I'm still unsure of. Pretty cool, though.

"surf the internet with the StumbleUpon toolbar" ROFL!. Am I the only one who finds that hilarious? if you search for soemthing or type in it's web address directly you can hardly call concider that stumbling upon it. lol. it's like a stalker hiding outside a window all night then saying "oh. i just happened to be in the neighborhood". :P ok. I'm weird. but that seriously cracks me up.

There's a tutorial for it somewhere. Let me see if I can find it.

And another This one mentions the bicycle Ben.

The cycling one is fake, I've seen it before, but the others I'm not sure. I have seen it done really well with real photos :)

Anyone notice that Rob O used this technique in the most recent free study?

ETA: He used the Photoshop method, that is, to replicate what the tilt capabilities of a tilt/shift lens could produce.

It's a fun technique and pretty easy to do. It's been done several times at DPC. I'm surprised more people haven't seen by now.

There's a fairly young photographer here in Japan who produces shots like this; he uses a special camera and lens set-up.He's had at least one book published so far, as well as being featured on TV and in magazines.

That is a fun effect to attempt! Here are a couple quickies I just tried from a DPC GTG a few years ago in Altoona, PA:

Not sure if they pass the realism test very well...

one of the things I read that helps is to up the saturation to an abnormal level to make it look more...well abnormal.

Awesome! Thanks for the link Monica!

Edit: Did some research on tilt-shift lenses...found this in wikipedia (italics, bold are mine)

Miniature faking
Main article: tilt-shift miniature faking
Miniature faking, in which the location in the photograph appears to have been created in miniature, can be done using the technique. This was popular in the early years of the twenty-first century.[1]

This thread sparked my interest in these processes, so I gave it a go and created:

We don't have anything really tall here, so this is what I came up with.
I'd love to see everyone elses!
