I love this Joby Gorillapod thing (joby) â€Â¦ but I need a "ball-head" that's not too pricey â€Â¦ maybe a pistol grip thing like I've seen in some images with the Gorillapod â€Â¦
Any advice on a decent pistol-grip or ball head ??

| Which size do you have...I need a tripod that can fit in my carry-on luggage because I will be flying alot of standby soon. |

It's the zoom SLR version â€Â¦ perfect size for putting in a backpack (or briefcase I suppose).

The thing is flexible so why would you need any head at all? Just twist it.
Next thought is weight - what will this support? I ask as I had a grip ball head and it will support 5.3 pounds. Fine for somethings, but I got a 70-200 2.8 lens a 30D on there and I've exceeded the limit so it's not holding things where I put them.
A ballhead has weight so add that to the camera and lens weight - you may find this thing won't work and will collapse or not hold still with all that on it.

I want the thing to be as stable as possible â€Â¦ It could probably twist into place for a portrait crop but the legs need to be contorted ina way making it less stable. I also would like a quicker release so I don't have to spin it off each time.
I'm thinking a ball head might allow for more functionality - BHphoto sells a version with a ball-head but I thought it would be cooler with a pistol-grip â€Â¦ I like to say that ;P
It might help your heavy lens / camera issue also.
