This is an excellent starting point into learning the way lens manufacturers̢۪ grade performance. This is not the end all though, but a great starting point.

that's a great overview of MTF.
For those interested in further reading on the technical side of anlyzing imaging system performance, see this site. You can spend days there, and all his stuff is very well written.
Canon publishes MTF graphs for all their lenses on the Caon USA Website. Some results are also available on Photodo.com, but it has not been updated in about three years. Literally.
Be aware that not all published MTF charts use the same methods; some use two frequencies, some three. Photodo used 40 lines/mm as the highest resolution pattern, Canon uses 30.
