She looks like Jennifer Aniston.

I started off by burning the edges...then i cleaned up the skin with the healing brush. Next i used the dodge tool at 8% opacity to lighten up ONLY the color in the eyes...NOT the whites. Next i made a new background layer and used the gaussian blur at 8pixels...made a mask on that and brought back the eyes, lips, some hair and eyebrows to sharp...adjusted that layer to 40% opacity. Next, i created a curves adjustment layer and bumped up the contrast quite a bit. Burned a bit more here and there...unsharp mask filter(on the FULL res 10MP image) at 163, 1.3, 2 settings. And...thats about it...again, those settings were full the original image at full res so the settings would be more exaggerated with the low res image i posted, but hopefully u get the idea!

Thanks for being so generous with your technique. We all very much appreciate it!

In Dan's example, he's applying a soft-focus technique using a blurred copy of the image. The steps would go something like this:
- Create duplicate layer (right-click on layer, choose create duplicate layer)
- Blur the layer - apply gaussian blur of about 2px or to taste
- Create layer mask on duplicate layer - with that layer active, click the icon at the bottom of the layers palette that looks like a rectangle with a circle in it.
- Mask the layer - with the brush tool selected and the foreground color set to black, paint on the mask (you'll need to click on the mask window in the layer first). You may want to set the opacity of the brush to about 33%. As you point on the mask, you'll be revealing the underlying (sharp) layer. Paint back in the areas you want sharper; eyes, lips, and maybe hair.
- Set the opacity of the blurred layer - this sets the strength of the soft focus effect. Start with 40% and try a little less or more, to taste.

We should do stuff like this more often. This has probably been one of the best learning experiences since I've been on the site.

Wow I am so excited! I had given up on this thread a while back because there were only a couple suggestions which were nice but I am sooo excited we got the original to play around with. Thanks for the feedback everyone!

I used a few curves to get the tones of the skin and selective color adjustments to get the skin color close. I dodged and burned the skin to try and match it up. Mostly in the midtones. To get the skin smooth I duplicated the background layer and applied gaussian blur at seven pixels. Masked out the effet on the eyes hair and mouth and background. then faded the effect back to around 12%. Sharpened using Luko USM, the settings are this.
Filter/Unsharpmask/18/40/0
Filter/Unsharpmask/150/0.3/0
Edit/FadeUnsharpmask/100%/Darken
Filter/Unsharpmask/150/0.3/0
Edit/FadeUnsharpmask/50%/Lighten

This phot of mine has a really similar editing techniques and in the photo the link has really detailed editing notes if your interested. :)

Damn Joe, you nailed it!

So I had a go at this with a shot from a photoshoot I had a couple of weeks ago. It's a little more than I would normally do, but I like it. Thanks for everyones tips in this thread. Most helpful. :)

Thought I'd throw the original up also to compare.

Lot of Burning of backgrounds going on here.

Call me lazy but does anyone else use a Vignetted Layer and then "erase" subject or areas they want to come through?

(this was done with Corel PSP Photo XI)

I use Xero Graphics Soft Vignette PS plug-in Filter.
freeware (set 4) //www.xero-graphics.co.uk/freeware.htm

Duplitcate my background, set to Opacity of @ 38 (60-70 for really darkness)
Apply the Soft Vignette (Sharp, Background Color, 1 repeat, Strength that fits the mood)
Adjust the Height/width as needed.

Get me a big ol eraser brush using varying Opacities from 12-32 and erase the area(s) I want to come through.

Blend down and smooth or burn edges I may have goofed up.

This is not that an extreme example but you can see the difference.

The Xero Graphics Soft Vignette filter also does a whole bunch of other things like zoom in/out, radials etc... I use the same technique with zoom in/out and erase the areas that I do not want the motion blur really cool to play with. But that is another thread.

My 5 ½ minute "throw all kinds of stuff at it" edit:

From - to -> - and ->

But no Dodging / Burning done either. (I'm useless at it)
