My score creeped up into a 6. To think I almost didn't enter this challenge. I am so excited. I hope it stays but like I said earlier I would have been happy with a high 5. Now I am speechless. |

2.2 ?
Is it too late to hope for a 3.0?
Sigh.

Murdering a puppy is not a sport. And it's not
considered murder if it craps on a new expensive rug.
I'm talking about wall to wall shag carpeting here. |

I agree with you. Clearly some juvenile behavior evident, which should be squelched sooner, rather than later. A DQ for "going for the brown" mockery of the challenge would be justice. For all of us who entered and voted in good faith, those who act in bad faith steal our time and energy.
I disagree. In the world of sports, you have plenty of examples of clowning", entertainment, acting silly and playfulness, all of which happens in the arena in relationship to the sporting event, but none of which is professional pursuit of the "win". Are these sporting clowns (some of whom are the actual professional atheletes) wasting everyone's time and acting in bad faith? If sports is only about winning I'd agree. But sports like photography is about many more things than how high you score! Entries which are "going for the brown" waste nobody's time since nobody is required to vote on any specific entry, just on 20% overall. "Going for the Brown" is not acting in bad faith, nor is it stealing anyone's time and energy. It may merely be a playful way of participating in the sport of DPC, having fun on the sidelines while all the serious folks are out there on the field getting sweaty over the score. |
And, some think building defacement graffiti is "fine art". Yes, we have clowns. I wouldn't suggest offending the first rate clowns by saying the Brown crowd is somehow akin to them. What we have at DPC is sort of like the occasional drunken fan who runs across the football field... naked and out of control.... in order to get "exposure" on national television. |
So who gets to decide what counts as going for the brown, what is just poor photography, what is a beginner's effort and what is experimental?

Without talking about any specific images, there is a clear difference between the images which are intentionally sabotaged to be ugly and those which are simply a beginner's misguided pathway. Seems very obvious to me. The "Go for the Brown" images are too clever by half. |

I'm fascinated by hahn23's phrase "The Brown Crowd". The post quoted above is written as though every person who places last on DPC has somehow defaced this pristine website! I'm wondering how a challenge would happen without someone placing last. Like every league of team sports, there will always be those who place first and those who place last. Last place teams are not necessarily offensive or defacing the name of sports. Neither does it help the DPC league of photographers to compare "the Brown crowd" with naked drunken fans seeking unseemly exposure. That some photographers occasionally try to place last takes nothing away from those who try to place first. If anything, they create more room for ribbon seekers to move up the competitive ladder. |

yay, still going up! I would love a few comments though :/
and to someone who was at 2.2 and hoping for a 3: at least you got 11 comments, some of them must have said anything about why they scored you so low?

this would be my guess...although, when capturing a sport, and the pic is clear, does that mean its not motion??? can you really be sure????
~~S |
The quality of the image should stand on it's own.
Motion, or not is up to the artist. It is up to the viewer to determine if the image stands on it's own.
Just because there is no motion in the image does not mean that there was not. A high shutter speed will stop motion.

If the pic is clear when stopping motion you can usually tell if there is an action going on by the persons body position or expression.
I've been scoring this one rather tightly, but I've tried to leave a comment on everything I've scored 5 or less, if I offend anyone that is not my intent, it's just my opinion.
If there are people in the picture and I can't see there faces or they are off in the distance, or if there is blur in the photo's main subject I will not rate higher than a 5.
Once again just my opinion, but if you look in any paper or magazine the pics are usually in focus and a tight crop on the subject, with no more than 2 to 5 players in the pic, with no blur unless it's a pan shot of something or someone in motion and then the main subject is uually in focus. |
There definetly are guidelines to sports photography, that would be inappropriate of me to copy and paste right now.
But, one could go to Sports Shooterand find these guidelines, or one could go to my blog Sports Pictureto find these guidelines.
To tell the truth, I have seen little in the challenge that even come close to the guidelines.

Rather than posting links to external websites, have you been leaving comments for these pictures entailing what might be wrong? These are far more helpful to those new to sports photography (and just photography in general). At least for me, someone who really doesn't shoot these kind of photos day to day. |

The voters have spoken and based on the
2.2 avg. and 12 comments, they're saying that
I should go back to playing it safe. So I should
stop taking experimental risks, and trying something different.
I realize now that I should just leave risk taking to the pros,
who have the prerequisite skills to realize their artistic vision.
Skills that I obviously don't have yet.
It's a lesson learned.

OR you can continue taking risks and do what makes you happy or what you like. You can take risks with some & play it safe with others. Hopefully you are at least getting helpful comments. |

If you really want a high score, then, yes, you need to stay further inside the box. The winners may do things "outside the box," but they have a pretty good grasp of the fundamentals of focus, lighting and composition before they step out. Regardless of what you might read in these forums, getting a top score in a challenge requires a fair amount of skill. Look at Judi's free study entry:
It's definitely outside the box, definitely art, and the risk she took is reflected in her score. It's also an amazing piece, that took a huge amount of skill, and many hours of work.
Whether or not scoring high is a skill you want to take the time and effort to develop is up to you. Plenty of people have a great time entering challenges without spending much time worrying about winning. If the score doesn't matter, then do what makes you happy.
