The simplicity challenge has restored my faith in the DP community. There have been some pretty poor turnouts lately in the quality department, present company included, but from the first batch of photos I've looked through in the simplicity challenge I'm once again seeing a multitude if highly creative and engaging examples photography, present company excluded... ;D
Great to see. I'm going to have fun voting on this one. |

There's some talented work out there in this one... just when I kick my own work up a notch, everyone else goes up two notches.
Simply Amazing! |

My entry is probably my best one so far, the scores are doing well for now - only 14 votes though.
Since I entered it I keep looking at it and I think it is now my favorite, everything I did came out the way I wanted, it looks as I'd envisioned, down to the shadows - a definite first for me!
Others seem to like it so far but with it being a simple shot, I guess the truth is there wasn't much to really screw up. ;)
Happily, anything people don't like won't bother me. I'm not expecting a ribbon in the least but its a winner to me already, and that's a great feeling! I hope it happens more often this way. |

I think part of the reason why the "Simplicity" challenge has "some really good entries" is because simplicity is one of the things that should always be considered when composing a picture and/or finding a subject. In this challenge, we kind of "forced" people to fully have that concept in mind, which is great. Since joining DPC and learning a lot about "composition", I now look more carefully at what I'm shooting. One of the things I ask myself is "is there anything I can do to simplify this picture?"
The other thing is what LucidLotus said: with a simple shot, there is sometimes less to "go wrong".
I predict this will be a fairly high-scoring challenge... |

I'll agree. This is the highest scoring I've done so far.
It's funny how simplicity can sometimes bring out the best. |

By far the best challenge so far (in my time here at least). I have never given so high scores, I'm almost glad I didn't submit a shot for this one, It would never beat many of these shots. Looking forward to see who wins. (Don't rely on a ribbon if you have a high score, there will be many high ones guys...) |

This is crazy- the suspense is killing me! Every hour checking to see how my score has changed incrementally. 5.1024 at last check. I guess I'll be happy if I finish above 5 ;-)
By the same token I'm kinda surprised- 127 votes and only 2 comments. Oh well, at least they're good!

I happy to hear that so many folks are pleased with their entries this time around. I, myself, am very pleased with my shot. Not expecting a ribbon or anything but defintely looking to score my highest yet!
There so many good entries though & I like them for so many different reason. I'm working my way thru commenting on all of them! Wish me luck! Made about 100 so far. I'm trying to comment on more that whether I like it or not but with specifics. It's hard. I am concentrating on comments for borders & stuff as well since there have been some discussions on whether thye work or not & whether people like 'em.
Good luck everyone! Hope everyone keeps movin' on up!

Yep, I first started making comments during "Money" and decided I'm going to comment on every shot I vote on. That way it's not just a number, there is some reasoning behind it- I hope that makes it more helpful to people. I may not vote on the whole lot of photos, but the ones I do will at least get feedback too. And of course I'm making sure to vote on at least 20% in each contest.

Just curious really, but why don't people vote on all the shots? Is it time or what?

For me it's time - I like to give each shot a good look and consider all aspects of the photo. Don't always have enough time to do that with every challenge.

Everyone is now adjusting their votes, and sadly, they adjusted mine waaaaaayyyy down.
I have fallen from a 5.75 to a 5.50
That's a lot! |

Not happy about this trend...I started at 5.9 and as of latest update was just under 5.5 ... feels like a scene from the movie 'DAS BOOT' |

Seems to be the consensus all around... I got up to just over 5.7 but have slowly, but surely been dropping and am now at 5.3 something. Oh well, I'm still pretty happy being that it's my first submission. I think there a lot of great shots in this one!
Good luck to everyone! |

"Clarity of expression; lack of sophistication; absence of complexity; plainness. Capture the essence of simplicity in your photograph."
Does a B/W photo fit the topic better than a color photo? |

I would have to say no. Simplicity is shown in many ways:
keeping clutter out of the background
having lot's of negative space in a color or b/w photo
showing something from a bygone era
a single subject
the broad variety of images in the challenge bears witness to the broad understanding of simplicity. |

Going by what most folks did, including myself, I would think so. I guess the lack of colour adds to the simplicity. |
