My boss runs his village Cricket Club and has asked me to do a photoshoot next week when a local boxer will be giving a talk. No brief to speak of but he wants some pictures of the talk, a few candids and maybe a group shot.

If I do a decent job there may be an avenue for shooting cricket matches for local clubs in the summer (for real money) and maybe even a route to the local rag. Was planning on taking the 70-200/F2.8L IS on the 20D and either the 17-40/F4 L or 28-70/F2.8L on the 1DMKIIn for the group shots. The talk is 7-8pm inside and maybe some outdoor shots as well. I'll be taking the 580EX along but don't really want to mess with flash.

Thoughts/ideas anyone? should I concentrate on the boxer giving the talk (70-200) or a wider view of the group with the talker in the bg?. I'll be shooting in RAW with large JPEGS, showing the JPEGS and editing the RAW files they (might)want. Have promised some pictures for free for the team site but will keep them low res and try and sell some high res pics if peeps want them. Oh, and is it just a case of phoning the local rag and asking if they want to use any images?

This type of job usually gets interesting especially when you do it for friends. You think you're doing them a favor in the hopes of future jobs. Except, once you establish the free one, they'll expect you to do it for free again. Also, since you're doing it for free, it must be easy, so they'll ask for more.

Except, this is your boss. What if there are problems and things go wrong? It's one thing to write off a friend, you can't actually write off your boss.

I would charge you boss something. At least cost. This will give a value to your work.

Good luck.

lol yes, just what I have thought when I have read similar posts lol. I forgot to mention I'm actually on call during the shoot and my boss is going to field my calls so I guess I'm on time and a half and any editing will be done whilst on call lol. I have told him this is a one off and if things turn out ok he will pass my name on to more clubs - pity Cricket is a boring subject to photograph (imho)

So, you'll be on call and on company time. This might look like a work-for-hire situation and thus your boss would have the copyright on all the images.

Maybe you should get a contract together just in case that spells everything out. Like who owns the copyrights and what will happen when things go wrong. Just spell everything out.

The Company pay me to be 'on call' they have no ownership over what I do during that 'on call' period as long as I'm on the end of the phone and can log on within 30 minutes of the call. If the worst comes to the worst my boss said he'd log on. I do understand what you said though and have clarified things with my boss. If I can't get a wireless connection there I'll use his blackberry.

It'd only be work for hire if the photos were inside the scope of his normal work duties. Working on the clock doesn't imply copyright transfer.

Then again that's how work for hire is defined in the US, not sure about UK.
