Hi there!

I'm travelling to Denver and I wanted to know if at the airport in the US they ask you to turn the laptop on, that kind of cheking....

And by the way is there a good photo store in Denver?

Thanks

They don't make you turn on your laptop at the airport, no, but you will have to take it out of the bag to run it through the x-ray machine. And once in Denver, I highly recommend Denver Pro Photo.

All US airports you have to take laptop and video cameras out and put it in a tray by itself. Only rarely have I heard of people having to turn them on. I have had my cameras swabbed for residues during a more thorough hand check though.

Just be calm and professional and let the TSA folks do their job. It's nerve wrecking watching someone else man handeling you gear though. :\

Guess I've been unlucky, but I've had to turn on every piece of electronics (laptop, PSP, mp3 player) every single time I've gone through an airport. Other than that, no hassle.

Any particular airport or all of them?

Thank's for your input.

All over europe also they make you put the laptop on a separate tray. But that's ok. I've heard some things like in Canada they make you turn the laptop on and se if you have photos of minors and ask you for model release and that kind of stuff.

Just to double check

I've never heard of that. It sounds quite ridiculous to me, actually. I can't imagine the TSA would waste time on stuff like that. They tend to be overwhelmed as it is. As long as you're not carrying a bomb, I can't imagine they would care about what's on your laptop.

Though I haven'ttravelled overseas with my laptop, domestically they have never asked to turn it on. You just may need to put it in a bin by itself going through security at your end, like they do here. Reason being the x-ray machine has trouble 'seeing' through the laptop AND whatever else is in the case.

P.S. If there's a good camera store here I haven't seen it. The closest is Wolf/Ritz Camera store.

Denver Pro Photo! Denver Pro Photo! I *heart* them. Their website is a bit unfinished, but I have been very happy with them. They deal with a lot of students, so they're very open-minded as to what their customers should "look like". I've found them extremely knowledgeable. But you're from the Springs, right? I don't know of any down there.

Also - I did take my laptop to Italy and back a couple years ago, and not once did anyone in any of the four airports I was in asked me to turn it on.

All airports within the US. Security in Mexico is a complete joke. In Europe its not quite as lax, but other than Heathrow it was pretty much just getting herded through as fast as possible.

There is no TSA in Canada. I have heard of 2 cases where foreigners coming into Canadian airports have had to turn on the computers and show security the photos. One was of a person here on DPC who ended up missing his ground transportation because security was looking at the many thousands of photos he had on his computer. You can probably search for that thread (it was over a year ago I believe).
In another case, a person from the US coming here to Newfoundland to help set up the Michaels' craft store was arrested for possession of child pornography in the form of photos on his laptop. I believe there was no reason to suspect that he had child pornography, but that his laptop was turned on and scanned for photos. Again, this was a couple of years ago.

But you are going to Denver so there's probably no problem. We flew into the US from Canada last year and didn't have to turn on the laptop.

If you're a film photographer, you might consider buying your film once you arrive at your destination, and have it processed before you leave.

TSA has a nasty habit of putting film through the x-ray.

The federal laws state that you may ask to have your film hand checked and not put through the machines. The law also states that signs must be posted informing you of this. Last time I was flying I saw the signs in Philadelphia and Ft. Lauderdale.

OK, OK, Denver Pro Photo. Off Alameda 2 blocks west of Broadway...got it, not TO far from me. I'm in Aurora......not the Springs.
