I selected the black point at the right side of the base of the largest stem.
Of course, only the person who was there can (hopefully) remember what it really looke like that day. |
Okay, question, dropper/picker? in levels? I don't understand, I don't see where to select that. All I see are the sliders.

Under the buttons there are three small eye-dropper icons, just above where it says preview with the checkmark box. |

Wow, I feel silly, lol. I have been using levels layers for a month or so now and I guess I had selective blindness, lol. I see it now, I never noticed those before! I was trying to open PS when I responded and my comp. locked up, hence the delay in responding. Thanks!! that's a big help for me!!

Have a question. I have been trying to create a new layer in photoshop, and when I try to edit I get a message that no pixels have been chosen. The layer on the screen always has a gray and white checkerboard look with no details. How do I get the image to appear on the next layer? |

When getting that error message, you have to to choose a layer that has pixel information. IE, the image, or an image that you have added too. If you just have a new layer, and have it high lighted, and are about to do something to the image itself, you will get that error.
A new layer that is not a copy of the image, but just simply a new layer does not have pixel information. That layer is to do other things such as painting for instance.

I thought I was choosing the layer I was working on. Okay, so I have an image. I have converted to black and white, and now I want to adjust for noise level, say. I want to only reduce noise on one part of the image, say a background that is very grainy. How would I do that without reducing grain on entire image? |

I think I got the answer. I reread the post by wavelength. I thought he said to go to new layer, but he wrote in newlayer/adjustment layer. I have been going to just new layer. Didn't see the description of new adjustment layer. I went to the first one on the list when I called up layers. Still, it only gives me two options in the adjustment layer description, brightness and contrast and levels. I guess I will have to see if I can do more than just those. CS2 was so much easier. I am finding elements to be very difficult and much more of a mire of commands and manipulations to get what I could get in cs2 in one stroke.
Too bad I downloaded the trial on cs2 already. My 30 days is up and I can't download it again, so I am stuck with elements for 30 days. I wish it wasn't so expensive. I would buy cs2 in a heartbeat, but price tag is way out of my league.

June, as far as I know, there should also be options for hue/saturation and photo filter. It's funny that you say you miss CS2, because my wife would probably trade you for elements ;) |

Four thoughts.
First, you can isolate that part of the image with a lasso tool, or equivalent.
You can use a masking layer.
Your can create an Alpha channel.
But most important of all, the Blue channel is the channel that shows all of the grain, dirt, and scratches. So, therefore, you can reduce noise in that channel.

The only viable option in elements is to use a lasso or selection brush (which elements has but CS2 does not). Alternately, you could copy the layer to a new one, run the noise removal, and then erase a hole in the upper layer.
I think someone once mentioned that you can trick elements into giving you a layer mask by creating a new hue/sat layer, tying that to the desired layer to mask and use the masking option on the Hue/sat layer. I'm not sure if this works on all versions of PSE though.

Steve, your bold capitals are yelling. Are you yelling?
I did not know, nor do I know Elements.
Stop yelling.

Thanks for the help. I actually can do some of the things that wavelength said I couldn't. I have downloaded Elements vs. 5 and I think it has a few more perks than the previous elements. Anyway, I am learning to use it. I am using photoshop for my black and white 30 day challenge. Starting with todays pic (day 6) I will be listing my steps exactly. Have a look as I post and let me know where I went wrong, or if I did it okay. I was much more comfortable editing todays image, and have cleared up issues such as resizing before saving. Found out I need to change resample method in order to change pixel size. I also used 4 layers in todays image. So I am beginning to get it a little better. |

Hmm, I may just get elements 5 for Erin anyways. She is in hate with CS2. I did know that they finally gave the program curves.
I'm glad you're getting more comfy, always good when learning finally comes to applying! |
