I would like to suggest having th PM system DPC intrinsic, rather than having it send an e-mail to the user and myself.

1. because I always forget to check the stupid box.
2. because I could just log into DPC and see my site specific messages there.
3. every other forum on the internet does it that way for a reason.
4. even if I check the box, it's all just "PM from so-and-so" and "PM to so-and-so" instead of being able to define a subject. I group all my mail by conversations, not timelines, it's really a PITA that all the PM's ever from a certain person will forever show up in a different thread in my e-mail because one says from and the other says says to.

I've setup a rule in Outlook that puts all of the PMs I get into one folder. Pretty easy to check for "DPChallenge Private Message" and I haven't lost a PM yet. However you're right most other sites have an inbox on the site where private messages are stored.

I'd have to whole-heartedly agree with wavelength on this - it IS a huge pain to have to log into / out of an entirely separate system just to read the message. Is it also feasible that the forum codes work within the messaging system - for example: I want to send a link of a certain picture to a friend here on DPC. Why not let them see the thumbnail while we're at it?

Regardless, I've wanted this internal messaging system ever since joining this site & it honestly has been THE most annoying thing here (read - thorn in my ...) Thx for listening!

Definately a good idea.
Very annoying with emails and to'ing and fro'ing.

I always forget to check other site's inbox for messages. Checking for all messages in one place is far easier than having to jump around the internet to get all my messages.

Oh, well. Hopefully there will be a way to opt out of this setup and still get PMs via email.

i'd agree it's probably a good idea, but i don't get enough messages where it would make much of a difference to me...

I would like to see this hooked up too... I don't get into my e-mail for a while sometimes but check DPC often. It sure would help me get back to people.

There's no reason they couldn't be set up to auto-send a copy to your inbox also, so this doesn't seem like a reason to not add functionality to me.

I've gotten some responses from others that they group their stuff in thunderbird or outlook by folder. I have no folders in gmail, so I guess I'm just screwed. :/

I don't get PMs, I guess Slippy has no friends.

It's just as well, as I don't like anybody and I wouldn't reply anyway.

its okay slippy - we don't like you either! ;)

oops - sorry OP... back to the thread!

Great suggestion as I'm contently having to manually "quote" someone else's PM to me to paste in my reply so they know why I'm actually contacting them. ;-)

Very true. There's always two sides to everything which is why we have preferences. Didn't mean the original post to sound so harsh.

;o)

If you assign a DPC label to the incoming DPC mail, then you only have to type DPC in the in the search box to see all (and only those) emails.

Very nearly the same as a folder.

That still doesn't really cover the fact that all the conversations are lumped into one big ball.

It's not going to be a big deal for most people, and you're all probably wondering why it is to me.

Since I re-started the Mentorship threads, I've probably sent and recieve literally hundreds of PM's.

In trying to find mentors for any given class, I can't really fully remember who I did and did not contact, mostly because some of them never responded, and all because I'm not used to checking the "send me this too" box. Now I'm stuck going "yeah, I MAY have contacted you already, oops, sorry" on the people I just had in mind but not sure if I contacted yet.

sigh. not really Langdon's problem though. Thanks for your time and comments peeps.

It's true that those folks that send and receive few PMs probably don't see this as a big deal. I must admit I'm in that boat. A few PMs a day is pretty much it for me. But for those that are actively involved in one of the side activities, like a WPL team, mentorship thread, etc., I can see how this can become a major hassle.
Personally I do agree that this idea is a good one, and hopefully at some point we can execute it. Pretty much top priority right now is integration of the WPL. I have a hunch that ironing out the inevitable bugs during season 5 is going to take some time.

It would be really cool if users could have the option of having it on-site or through email.

Still doesnt matter 100% for each side. Many people who register and dont use email much dont know that they have gotten PM's.

Internally everyone will always know they have messages.

Those who dont leave their mail client open but are active on dpc can stay uptodate... otherwise you might pm someone whos online but they forogt to check and they dont get back toy ou till the next day their on.

Those who do check their mail alot, leave their mail client open and stay uptodate every second of every detail of their life... Well now theyre set for on the go so when their on some random computer hey i have PMs.

Just a thought or 3
