fixed link ... just hit the "insert thumbnail link to site image" icon (2nd from the right) and put in only the number of the image "501140" (without the "") then hit ok....

The real trick to using Lucis is to do it without making it look like a cartoon.

04/30/2007 04:57:41 PM · #10
Johnny, which one of the LucisArts filters are you using?
04/30/2007 04:58:18 PM · #11
Johnny it looks like that you installed the demo and tried to hack it. This is what it does if you did that. If you did not try to hack the Demo you need to get in touch with Lucis art and have them give you the reset procedure.

Yeah according to a search I did that's what it may look like.

Ha. You do have the midias touch. Seems like everything you enter that is tonemapped/lucisarted (new word :P) does well.

Unless you want them to look cartoonish L()L... I love that effect.

I have tons of images that use the filter, my newer surfing ones do,
177, 179, 187, 192, 200 of my self portrait project to just pic a couple,

Both these use it...

Its a fun filter... and somtimes I go over board and sometimes you can't even till it was used... but its fun.

Someone posted a free version of a filter that did something similar but I don't remember the link. You can also achieve similar results using PS Shadow and Highlights and if you have PhotoMatix enhance the effect further. You could probably also use Curves to produce something similar as well.

Havn't figured out the whole tone mapping thing yet, and can't get photomatix to do anything decent at all for me...

So I have fun with LA.

All I have is the tone mapping plugin. Convert to 16-bit and play with the sliders, that's pretty much it.

I will definitely try out that photomatix thing.

And thanks for those free plug-ins!
I will have fun experimenting for the next whole day :)

I dunno where I got this but it works pretty good ...

Here is a great tutorial that produces the LucisArt look-alike effect that Allen used on the Pow Wow image attached. Done in PSP9 but should adapt to PSCS.
-----

Before applying the technique, it is necessary to download and install in your plugins folder, the following Photo Plugin's filters: High Pass Sharpening, Contrast Mask, and Local Contrast Enhancement. (While you are at it, you may want to download all of their free filters....I have found them to be useful) These filters may be downloaded here:

//www.photo-plugins.com/index.php?option=com_docman&Itemid=43

Following is my workflow:

1. Open your image and apply any pre-processing you might normally
do (Levels, USM, HSL, etc.).

2. Duplicate the background layer and name it "LucisArt look-alike". I
leave all settings at their default at this point.

3. If you have not already done so in your pre-processing, you should
adjust the lightness and contrast of the image (I use the "Clarify"
filter in PSP9)

4. Apply noise reduction to taste (again, I use PSP9 and the "Digital
Camera Noise Removal filter, with all settings around 50%)

5. Apply the Photo Plugins' "High Pass Sharpening" filter (adjust the
settings to your own taste). I used Range = 50; strength = 50 and
Hard Light. When applying the filter, be sure that the
"High Pass View" box is unchecked.

6. Apply the Photo Plugins' "Contrast Mask" filter; again adjusting the
settings to your own taste. (I used maximum settings) When applying the filter,
be sure that the "Contrast Mask Preview" box is unchecked.

7. Apply the Photo Plugins' "Local Contrast Enhancement" filter, using
your own settings. I used: Radius=100, Local Contrast Enhancement
= 10 and Blend with Original =200. When applying the filter, be sure that the
"Local Contrast View" box is unchecked.

8. Apply additional sharpening to taste.

9. Adjust the contrast to taste.

10. Adjust the layer opacity to get the desired effect ( generally, I use
around 40% - 50%).

11. Merge all layers and save.

That's all there is to it....very easy! Experiment with the settings of each
filter to achieve the effect that suits you best.

Good luck with the technique. I'm sure you will find that you can achieve results very similar to the LucisArt filter......I have! As with almost every technique, this one works better on some photos than others.

Should you wish, I could post some other examples using this technique.

Here is one: //alleyrat.smugmug.com/photos/92719995-L.jpg

Regards....

Allen

Do you have "shadow/highlight" under Image/Adjustments menu? If so you have Photoshop's version of tone mapping basically.

I wanted to try this to create images like Dave Hill so I purchased the Lucis Art plug-in. I have worked several images of mine with this plugin, and I dunno... its just not working for me. I like HIS work, but it just doesnt look right on mine. Maybe it is HDR he uses.. dunno..
