Blurgh.
I hate it when people try to get the lowest score because to an extent, I feel that they're making fun of me.
I don't quite know why.
I feel like they're making fun of new or inexperienced users.
That could just be my insecurity. |

No, I believe he is just saying that people are really getting uptight and should loosen up a bit.

No one is making fun of you...it is just something people do for themselves for kicks. |

Very sad that something like this has all your panties in a bunch.
I remember when DPC used to prefer laughing over fighting...
:-( |
No doubt man. This place sure is getting stiff anymore isn't it? |
And I remember a time when people respected each other and worked to help each other learn. |
I think people on the site would still be willing to help you learn. They just hardly do it on the forums anymore because we've been flooded by jackasses the last few months or so. I don't think someone going for a brown ribbon has had any effect on that. Look at it this way, if only 2 or 3 are going for a brown in a challenge then it must be the other 250 going for the blue that are screwing everything up! :D

What's up to him? That he needs to change because a handful of people don't agree with it? If it's taking up too much time, just ignore any image that looks like it's going for the brown during voting then go back and visit it after the challenge is over. If it doesn't look like s/he wasn't going for the brown then leave some advice. To be perfectly honest, I don't see but a single comment on his image during the challenge that looks like it was an inconvenience to do. I could take less than 5 minutes and type out exactly what was said. 5 minutes doesn't seem like a long tiome to me. If it did I sure wouldn't be wasting what free time I had to post in the forums.
How many of those complaining about the "brown ribbon joke" said that the taking down of the vanish challenge was no big deal?
I'm sorry but for the life of me I just don't get it.

There's no "need" involved. Some people, when told they've upset someone, examine their behavior and determine whether the benefit they derived was worth upsetting others. Others never consider the effects of their behavior on others. So the first thing that's up to him, and anyone else, is whether to consider those other people's feelings. The second thing that's up to him is whether to change.
I'm not sure what you're driving at with the vanish challenge reference, but I was someone who thought taking it down was a bad move. Considerably worse, though, because it was the site itself wasting its members' time.

I understand - so for the record I wan't people here to know that I am being upset by threads who try to force people to do things that aren't against the rules or silly things that really don't bother but a small number. I trust that those of you that do this will take a step back, examine your behavior, and decide if hurting me is worth it.
Okay, that was tongue in cheek but definitely follows the same line of thought.

Not driving at anything at all but just wondering if the majority of the people who are speaking out against this member for pulling a joke that "wasted precious time" spoke out against Langdon and/or the SC for doing the same. |

Thanks for taking my inventory. And I dig you don't like me the feeling is mutual however if you are going to pay so much attention to me I would suggest looking past your turned up nose. If you have one finger pointing at me you have 4 more pointing right back at yourself. Peace!
And Jeff thanks for the PM I understand and my first post was directed at some other content not your initial post.

Obviously, you have not read the entire thread...indeed not even paid attention to the thread's title. No one was singled out. Then someone presented himself as a recent person who fit the bill and brought along his justifications.
I hardly think this conversation is deserving of poo-pooing. If you want to poo-poo behavior that brings the site down there are plenty of threads BITCHING about scores, lack of comments, low votes, trolls, etc.
Where's the ambiguity in don't "troll for low votes"? Trolling is trolling, whether giving or receiving. |

I neither like nor dislike you. I don't know you I only know your statements and respond to those. I simply find it absurd that you bitch about bitching... How constructive is that? If you think I single you out you're wrong. If there are other occasions we've disagreed you haven't told me. I have a fully functional e-mail address attached to the PM in my profile... |

Well then I guess it has just been established. Maybe its just me. You just took my inventory so you should know. :-\
And sadly this proves my so called non-constructive comment, about the sad reality of the forums turning into a slug fest, true...
No more Hi-jack Jeff I will just go hang out in the bar that's where I belong anyway...

As a 'novice' here on the site, I only have a couple thoughts and they don't entirely go together. One, it's a shame that people felt their time was wasted giving advice to someone who didn't want it. With the number of various threads around here bemoaning varieties of comments or lack thereof, it really raises my concern about offering a comment. On the other hand, I'm never worried that I'm going to place last, because someone with significantly more skill than I am is gunning for it. I think I would be mortified to place last (though I think it's no big deal for other folks). Of course, this makes 'second-to-last' the new 'last'....
I guess it's just one of those things.

Every now and then, I like to throw in a "Dog".
I want to see what the general public has to say, if there are any thought processes igniting.
Mainly, I want to see if anyone is paying attention.
I can care less about my average.

I read the entire thread and the thread title. Allow me to rephrase and see if this makes any bit of a difference, mmkay?

Is that any better for you? How did you react to that huge waste of time KaDi?

Not too sure I care much for your tone so I'll just go ahead and ask you who the hell you think you are to label my opinions as poo poo? Frankly, the fact that a person (who has not a bit of right to look down their nose at anyone I might add) would waste time worrying about someone submitting for the brown is ridiculous and on the verge of just plain sad. How's that suit you for poo poo? |

Yes, I did. Repeatedly. Just ask Ursula, L2, and others. :) And look in the threads on the topic.

Oh, I did. Trust me. It's a shame that some of the people in agreement with you on this topic weren't in such agreement on the other. Weird isn't it? Why would that be?

Even though I agree with the OP's suggestion, I also think waz is right that hard feelings are ruling the forums, and most particularly here. :( You should be able to have a civil discussion without it deteriorating into a bunch of insults. That's why I've always liked the forums here. Everyone was mature enough to have a conversation sans insults, and some measure of control was exercised by both users and admins in this regard. But lately..... |

I like to see people going for brown ribbons. It's a way to question DPC's normative values and provides some variety in what can be overly homogeneous challenges.

MAC - "So, PC, do you want to see my brown ribbon entry?"
PC - "I have a better idea. Why don't we calculate how much time you've just wasted."
ohhh.. Apple.. you make gooooood commercials. |

well this certainly took longer :).
I don't care about people going for the brown, I don't mind commenting on and "accidently" critiquing someone going for the brown. Commenting on images helps me learn about what I think makes a good photo, and helps me be able to put into words exactly what I think would make something better. It doesn't bother me in the least, I learn almost as much commenting as I do shooting and receiving comments. I can't worry about what others are doing with their entries. Critiquing something is as much for me as it is for the entrant. But when people go for the brown, make it challenging on yourself, use 640 pixels and try to do it with your shot in focus :)
My two cents.
