| Even though you have an "L" designation, not all L's are created equal. What you gain in versatility, you lose in speed and sharpness. |

I passed it up. I think I am going to go for the 70-200 F2.8L IS USM. I have heard alot of good things about this one. If I see the motorcycle, I will probably upgrade to the 5D as well. |

I have used that lens. You get a lot of versatility out of it. It's sharper than my 70-200 2.8 plus 2x extender. But definitely not as sharp as my 70-200 without the extender. I've shot some soccer games with it and it's kind of nice that, one minute you can be shooting across the field at 350mm and the next minute you're shooting the action right in front of you at 35mm.
The two downsides in my mind are: 1) it's a push-pull zoom which takes some getting used to, and 2) it's not a fixed aperture, which means the more you zoom in on your subject (or the further away they get, which requires you to zoom in), the less light you're going to be getting. Still... at f/5.6, it's no slower than the 70-200 plus 2x extender. So it's not that bad a deal.
I give it one thumb up, one thumb down. If someone gave it to me, I'd definitely use it. But I'm not so sure I'd be willing to plunk down that kind of change for it.
