I was really saddened to see the death of this great journalist and historian. I had the chance to listen to a speach he gave about a year ago regarding Vietnam. He spoke about the "Great Lie Machine" - the political reasons for the non-truths propigated by the government back in the late 60s and early 70s that kept the war going. At the end of the speach he was asked about the parallels today in Iraq. His conclusions were unfortunately that he sees many of the same problems now as then, but in some cases worse with todays press (the main networks, NYTimes, and the pundints on cable) that follow along blindly.

Hopefully students today are reading and learning from men like Mr Halberstam and will bring some sanity back to our government.

(Sorry for my soap boxing here but I was really moved by this guy.)
