I probably blew a chance at a fun project out of stupidity. I got a boatload of great shots of an 'impromtu show' on Sunday 22nd. Afterwards I went over and introduced myself. I told them I probably got some cool photos, gave them my business card (mineral exploration company card), and said if they emailed me I'd send them some of the photos.

They were very interested, I guess partly because my 100-400 was in my hands. They said they were doing a performance in a month and needed a photographer. To give you an idea, I'd get to ride in a boat. I'm leaving details out because I'm using one of the shots in a challenge, so if you're a freak about that kind of thing, please change the channel. I don't give a crap about the score, it's meaningless anyway except for the trash-talking-factor. Doing new, fun things, however, is meaningful.

When they asked if I was a photographer, I said, "No. I'm a geologist." My card is also that of a geologist. Of course the card probably went straight into the trash so my shots won't even get a chance at consideration. If I'd given them a simple photography-related card, my shots would have had a better chance at being seen, and if good enough I'd get a chance at some fun gigs, which of course leads to all sorts of networking opportunities. Not that I need money or gigs, I'm quite busy as a geologist right now, but who knows what the future holds, and we may as well cram some fun into the present, right?

So I'm converting my SmugMug account accordingly and printing some non-geology cards to hand out in situations like the above, should they ever occur again. I don't want a lot of info, maybe Burlington added on.

Anybody have any design suggestions? Similar? Totally different?

Hey, Great story ;). A 100-400 turns any mere mortal into a photog!

I think the card is eye catching and professional at the same time. Put this card with the bazooka and you won't be cracking rocks much longer. Good luck!

Can you make ring stand out (different color maybe?) for us who are slightly dyslexic? I read Fo-curse-ring on first glance.

Okay, for future reference. Why not simply present yourself as both. And simply express, "I am a professional rock photographer". Now, you don't even have to mention that you're a geologist. And well, next thing you know they're calling you back.

Then you can explain the details when in the middle of the shoot one of the clients asks you "So what musicians have you photographed?" And you can just play dumb. "But you said you're a professional rock photographer."

At that point you can explain, "Oh, yes...I have a degree in geology and I scout for minerals and take photographs of geological formations and potential mineral mining sites.

;)

My one criticism of the business card is there is no aspect of photography in it. I think a light overlay of a foto, even if just in the top right hand area like a watermark, would be a good addition.

OMG, your real name is John?

I think the cards and website are great ideas. It's always a good to have your product in the right packaging.

LOL, I knew someone would catch on to my name! I haven't done the website yet, though it's there. I like simple.

Thanks for the suggestions folks!

Wavelength, good point. I'll try another shade for ring.

Saj, Haha! I actually have been paid to photograph rocks and etc. I spent two days straight photographing drill core... ZZzzzz. It's more fun zipping around on an ATV shooting scenery. I don't know about adding much else, I'm pretty attached to blank space. Hmmm.

Oh ya. I didn't make that background either (webfound), so if I use it I'll have to ask the guy first, but I'm not married to it by any means.
