My 430 rudely died on me, and it wasn't really adequate for my purposes anyway. I really can't afford the 580 right now. I was noticing on eBay that there are suddenly a lot more off brand flases that say they'll work with the 30D. Are any of them worth a darn, or should I consider living without a flash until I cna manage the 580?

Sometimes it may be best to wait.

1:)You don't know what you are buying.
2:)You are buying something cheaper.
3:)It is ebay.

Well, one of them was a Sigma, which is probably the only off brand that I'd seriously consider. When I was still using film, I had a Sigma flash.

I have never used it, but am seriously considering buying a Sigma 500 DG Super since it is supposed to be roughly equivalent to the 580ex but for a lot less.

Other posts have mentioned that it is not quite as fast recharge or as accurate for exposure as the 580, but for what i'm doing (non-pro) it should work out fine.

Anyone that owns one care to enlighten?

I love my Sigma EF500 DG Super, I'm considering getting another one too. It's considerably less than the 580EX, as mentioned, and it has roughly the same features. I would definitely reccommend it. However, make sure you don't get the Sigma EF500 DG ST. The ST doesn't have an LCD screen on it and isn't nearly as good.

Err nevermind it seems to looking at the chart, doesnt list K10D but does list K100

Hi,

Ive just ordered a sigma 500 super DG to go with my new 5D. Wasnt sure which one to go for? Did think og a Metz flash, but couldnt see that many reviews on them. But as the price is half of the 580......

Will post my findings when my order arrives (hopefully by the weekend!!)

Ok, if I'm reading the specs I've managed to hunt down the Sigma is not quite as powerful as the 580EX, but a good bit more powerful than the 430EX. So, I'm also thinking that I'm going to go for it.

Yes, it's not quite as powerful as the 580EX, but it's more powerful, and cheaper than, the 430EX. Not to mention you can trigger it with your onboard flash (no auto ETTL though). Can't really go wrong with it unless you plan on beating on it, it doesn't really like that much...

Actually, if you order through bhphoto.com, the 430EX and the Sigma are almost exactly the same price. Do you know of some place it can be got for cheaper?

Yup, I got mine from here for a little less than $200 before shipping.
