Is it obviously better? Forgive me, since I'm a Nikoner, but on what are you basing the assessment that the 85 is better than the 50?
I always hear Canon and Nikon people rave about their respective 50mm primes. I've made mine my walking lens. |

the 85mm 1.8 is regarded as one of the sharpest canon lenses that is not L. And one of the sharpest canon lenses period.
i would def. go witht hat over the 50mm.

The Canon 50/1.8 has OK bokeh, but not spectacular by any stretch of the imagination. The 85/1.8 is much better in this respect, and is better built than the 50/1.8. Problem is, on an APS-C camera, the 85/1.8 may be a little long, especially if you want to do full-body portraits.
For a little *less* money than the 85/1.8, you can get the Canon 50/1.4, which has much better bokeh than the f/1.8 version, and is built better as well. It does not have USM, but I have not missed that on this lens. |

According to Canon, the 85mm f1.8 was designed for smooth bokeh, whereas the 50mm f1.8 was designed to cost as little as possible. |

In fact, the 100/2.8 Macro is as good an option as the 85/1.8 if one has enough room to frame properly. On an APS-C camera, it's a 160mm equivalent field of view, which is pretty long. That's not saying that a long lens is bad for portraits. I often (very often!) shoot candids at 200mm withthe 70-200/2.8. Stunning results. But ya gotta have room.
So in the end there are a number of good choices, depending on what FoV is required. From shortest to longest, here are all the best Canon choices (at reasonable cost):
50/1.4
85/1.8
100/2.8 Macro
100/2.0 (1)
135/2.0 L (2)
200/2.8L (3)
1) A bargain at <$400 USD. Honestly, though, if you desire macro as well, I think you'd be just as happy with the 100/2.8 Macro.
2) This is, at $900 USD, more expensive than the other choices. It is, however, Canon's absolute best prime under 300mm, bar none, and an absolute bargain at it's price level.
3.) Again, at $660 USD, a little more expensive than other choices. Probably too long unless tightly-framed candids are your game, in which case it might just be a good fit.
Edit for typo
