I think part of the issue might be WHAT aspect of the image people are voting on, technique or subject. In my opinion this is a site that should be voting on how well you executed an image NOT what the image is of. While the subject is important, I feel it should take a back seat in most challenges.

This, of course, is why the challenges are themed, right? Because the subject isn't really terribly important?

I had this job once in a studio to photograph clothes for catalogs. Not the "let's have fun, get the model to play dress up and do a twirl" kind of photography, but the boring as can be drudge "Here's a stack of sweaters, take a shot of the stack and take a shot of each sweater." Every one of those shots was as technically perfect as humanly possible with a tremendous amount of detail since everything was shot with a 4x5 view camera, yet, as photographs they were awful, hundreds and hundreds of technically perfect yet horribly boring shots. Every one totally soulless and devoid of any artistry.

Yet, you would score them high, based simply on the mechanics of nailing the exposure, focus and color. A feat that any trained monkey with a meter could pull off.

Why must an average given vote be above 5.5 for an opinion to matter or an outrage to be valid? Why do people with higher average scores given often seem to think they're holier than thou? The truth is that you don't know how that person votes. Personally, I can't remember the last time I gave a vote lower than 3, and that score is reserved for nothing-special DNMCs, but I do hand out lots of fives, and a few less sixes than fives, and 7-10 are reserved for the really good stuff. Somehow, that works out to 5.3, which by certain standards somehow makes me a troll. How darest any soul wretched as mine utter an opinion, eh? :P

It's amazing how you managed to read all of that from my one statement that had a smiley face after it. Wow......not paranoid are you?

I wouldn't be "paranoid" about it if I hadn't been attacked on that point more than once with posts that DIDN'T have benevolent little smilies on them.

Well I wasn't attacking anyone, sorry if you felt that way.

Karen, you little minx. You are causing trouble all over the place. You sure you aren't using smileys as a virtual version of "God bless her."? ;)

I say lay off the SC folx. They're doing a good job and have been showing a lot of patience with all the whining.
