Can anybody offer advice for insurance of camera equipment while travelling. i'll be backpacking thru thailand, europe and japan for a total of 5 months. to replace my camera and lenses if something went wrong, would probably cost me US$5000. Most travel insurance I have seen, won't cover this this expense.
My country of residence is Australia... does this matter with overseas insurance and would anybody recommend to use/avoid companies from abroad. Anything else to watch out for?
All help appreciated, as you could understand I don't want to stuff this up.

do you own a house?
i just went to NZ and made sure it was covered on my house insurance. |

A professional camera policy through State Farm runs about $100/year and covers your equipment internationally. You'll want a pro policy, even if you just sell one print a year to your mother, since anything resembling pro activity voids the coverage under your homeowner's policy. I actually had this conversation with my agent yesterday.
Though I just noticed you're not in the USA. But I bet Australia's policies are similar.
