Anyone using a Canon A510 with a 2Gb or 4Gb card.... any issues?
I know this is a how long is a string question, but any idea how many JPG-Fine pics do you get per 250Mb/500Mb/1Gb card? - just need a ballpark here; I know the answer depends on the subjects, ISO e.t.c.
It's my parents camera & they don't live here for me to play with it. I want to get them a large card for a trip but I cannot seem to find any specs to say what size card it will handle. I assume 2Gb would be fine but not sure about 4Gb - Help? |

Im not so sure the A510 is SDHC compatible. The A620 was not but the A630 and A640 are. If not this will ofcourse limit you to 2GB. Also assuming its firmware can handle that much some cameras are far more limited.
Im gonna look around for you hopefully some A510 owners can help.
EDIT - So far i can tell you Dpreview used a "512 MB SanDisk Ultra II SD" card for their tests. WHich doesnt mean anything its just what was market ready at the time.
Second EDIT - It has a Digic I processor which is capable of 2 GB doesnt mean this particular camera is but it should be still looking.
Oh and BTW with memory cards its 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 and so on not that it matters just noticed you said 250/500 of course after formattign thats about it lol

| I wouldn't be surprised if you could get 1000+ images on a 2GB card at the highest JPEG resolution. Thats a little bit of speculation but I think it probably wouldn't be too far off. So: 500/1GB, 250/512MB, etc... I think thats more or less what I got with my 4MP Canon s410, so it'd be the same/a little more for yours. |

Your camera will estimate 302 Images on a 512 Megabyte card at full res and sharpness. 542 with fine sharpness.

Thanks guys.... Seems like I should go for 2x2Gb rather then a 1x4Gb -> Might make more sense on price point anyway but have not looked yet & I have not bought a card in a long time so the sweet point might have moved slower then I think.
Seems reasonable that the A510 would not handle > 2Gb if the later model does not and I have to either send this overseas or give them explicit instructions, so better to go with the least hassles.
They need something VERY simple to deal with, so I need something like film rather then burning CD's or using an image tank :-) In fact, they should not have got a digi camera and stuck with film because the side issues are hard to deal with remotely :-/ |

True to a certain extent. The film however takes more room, costs more, gets less shots, has more down time. Plus it is sensitve to temperature and then processing. Id say in non vital tasks such as something that would make you tote your 20D. A point and shoot makes alot of sense.
The A620 is not a direct sucessor to the A510 its from a different line that has flipout screens. But i do believe the A620 came after it and it uses the same processor. So the fact that it does not support SDHC is a big clue. Which is why i came to my conclusion.
