I just read this THREAD lack of insurance and was gunna put in my 2 cents with my story and figured I'd post and ask for advice and see if anyone knows anthing about dental and can help me.

I needed to get my wisdom teeth out 3 years ago when I was told. Now I finally have dental through work and set an appointment to get an exam before the operation. Come to find out my dental only covers preventative until I pass a waiting period (6 months or a year, not sure, I have to double check). So I can get the check up covered (my dentist thinks) but NOTHING for the surgery. After the waiting period I get 80% I believe.

Here is the thing... I say wait 6 more months what does it matter after 3 years? Well they are actually GROWING IN now and that's a BIG problem because they are coming in sideways.

So my options... wait more. Get a different plan. Eat my losses and pay the freaking thing on my own like I should have done 3 years ago (only then I was only 18/19 and certainly couldn't afford it).

I'm just wondering if dental works like health insurance, where if I go to this check up and they tell me they have to come out... does that mean any NEW dental I get won't cover it because I already know about it?

Sorry that was long. Any help would be so much appreciated!

Sorry for your situation, but I don't have a clue. But this is good for a quick bump either way. *g*

If there is a dental school near you, check with them. You can often get impacted wisdom teeth removed for a fraction of the cost of a practicing dentist, and there is a senior oral surgeon supervising the surgery.

good luck!

Well I just had my check up. It's pretty bad. I waited forever.

Have a consultation about the surgery with the dentist and perhaps I'll find out how long I have to wait and see if it's possible to wait that long. He's very don't worry about insurance worry about oyu though and will prob tell me to take them out asap.

Oh well. Money down the tubes is always fun.

I had a friend who found a dentist in Tijuana (recommended by a friend of hers) who was U.S. educated, English speaking, and charged 1/3 of what U.S. dentists charge. If you can find someone like that (sorry, I don't know anyone) it might save you a lot of money, in exchange for extra time to get to and from Mexico.

As far as changing insurance, my experience has been that the waiting period only happens when you're getting insurance for the first time. When you change insurance, there's no new waiting period. I don't know your policy, so I could be wrong, though.

A lot of the time teeth change slowly, so if they aren't bothering you now, it might be possible to wait 6 months before you have it done. Ask the dentist once you find out what the waiting period is.

Hope this helps.
