Have been playing around with the saturation levels on this picture and I'm interested to see which one people think is the better of the two?

I like the first one better. The colours are too wahed out in the second. The bird has such nice colours so I like to see them used.

I'll give another vote for the first one.

Colour of the pukeko in the first shot is beautiful...... just as vibrant as they are. To me the greens are a little oversaturated though.......I'd love to see it with them toned down a little.

Lovely shot!

thank you all for the comments.

I agree that the greens do look a little bit overcooked so here is the original untouched version, perhaps I should have just left it as it was?

Out of the first two, definitely the first one. However, the leaves do look a bit too saturated, and look nicer in the original. Maybe make a saturation adjustment layer, then play around with the layer mask using a low opacity brush until you get the colours just right?

...

Some images lend themselves better to muted or vibrant colors than other images. Yours is best in vibrant colors. There may be individual differences about how much color saturation there should be but that is an entirely different issue.

Muted colors are best for creating or expressing mood or emotions different than natural beauty. Sometimes muted colors are applied to understate a subject when it works in a particular situation.

My rule of thumb when processing -

Find something that looks "cool" and then back it off to 30% of what you thought was "cool".

Layering subtleties is the magic of special effects and photo processing (watch those "bonus features" on your DVDs about how they did the effects, lots to learn there) -

FWIW

I find the first one too saturated, the second not enough. I'd like somewhere just in between the original and the super-saturated one I think.
