I've been looking at the range of 70-300 lenses, Canon (cheap kit plus more expensive IS version), Sigma, Tamron. It seems that none of these have innerfocusing, so all of them are difficult with a polariser. Anyone know of any others?

Sigma 70-300 APO looks like the pick of the bunch, but with the polariser issue, I might have to spring for something more expensive.

It's to be used as a general purpose enthusiasts telephoto, with a slight focus on kitesurfing pics, and really has to be able to take a CPL. I can go above the price of the basic 70-300 lenses if there is a kick-ass alternative inside 2 or 3 times their price.

I have the Sigma 100-300 f4, neither extends nor rotates, however it doesn't have any sort of IS. Canon's 100-400 front element doesn't rotate either but it's push-pull which is a whole other annoyance. The Canon 100-300 f4.5-5.6 USM's front element doesn't rotate either but I would choose one of the first two over this one.

My other option is to go for a nicer lens and get a 70-200. I've heard people say that the 70-200s are so much nicer that you can crop to the same image as a 300mm, and still get a better picture. Is this true?

Canon 70-300 IS is a nice lens, but for not much more, I could look at a 70-200 f4, or if I really push it, the sigma f2.8, and it will take the CPL no problem. Any comments?

For sports, I'll probably use it mostly at the longest end, and be cropping from there, but as a portrait lens, the loss of the 300 won't be an issue.

I would go with the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8. The glass is going to be better quality than the cheap Canon or any other cheap lens. It's also fast at 2.8 and if you want extra reach you can get the 1.4 tele extender. The ofhter problem with the cheaper lenses, you have a 10 mp camera, the resolution of the glass at the cheaper end won't give as nice an image. You will see a very bad pincushion effect.
