Hi all! Well, my S2 is not doing so hot lately. About 2 weeks ago I took my camera to a friends house and when I turned it on the lcd screen was black with the icons on it. I took off the lense cap and my IR filter and the screen was still black. Turned mode to auto and still black. I then took the batteries out and put them back in, then it worked. YEAH! Last weekend was my nephews 1ST BIRTHDAY! I get the camera when he starts stuffing his face with cake. I put in my newly refreshed and charged batteries and once again, a black screen. Needless to say, I was PO'd. All it does is take black pictures and black video with sound.

So I did some research on the web, and it sounds like it may be my CCD sensor. (Which Canon has replaced on some cameras)Do you all agree? If so, is there anything I can try to do to fix it? Why would this happen in the first place? I have taken good care of this camera and was hoping to have it for atleast 4 years.

I've already contacted Canon. Their reply was to send it in to be fixed at my cost, or buy a refurbished S2 for $185. I probably won't do either right now, just don't have the extra $, plus I wouldn't want to spend $185 and have the 'new' camera have the same problem in a year.

Thanks for your help and for allowing me to rant. I'll have to get my 35mm rebel ready :)

My friends old power shot would do this on and off. One day it just stopped. Its most likley the sensor and or any combination of the sensor either not being connected or not being able to transmit data or the cameras hardware not functioning to recieve data from the sensor.

If the cameras been dropped hard this happens. My Olympus took alot of abuse and if u press on the case the sensor goes out.

Its up to you on repairing it. The S2 is a great camera but a bit dated. With these things after 2 or 3 years its better to replace them.

(As far as camera's go when i shop around for SLR's i look for 4 years of service but only expect 2 from my P&S's since they take a bit of a beating)

Take it in. You will likely have a choice of getting it repaired or getting a cheap upgrade. Your call. I wouldn't upgrade too far, even 5 megapixels is pushing it for that size of sensor.
