Sort of, but not exactly. Basically - the mortgage specialist we've been talking to has found a lender who looks willing to give us the mortgage at this point. BUT - they don't do a pre-approval.
Basically - we've got the verbal okay, but no paperwork.
SO - now we find a home, in the price range we like (cheap), and make an offer. With the "conditional on financing" part in bold.
If it gets accepted, then we find out for sure if we get the mortgage or not.
Nothing like a non-guarantee. But better than nothing I guess.

the moral satisfaction I get from the knowledge that my photo is in a photo museum, it is also at the airport - it is not enough to cover $0 (zero) in my bank account.
I am kind of disappointed with all that art thing.
(and I do have a normal job too!)
could you dear wise teammates tell me something? |
I think "you will never get your money back" kind of summarizes it. First, I want to say I love your work. And from what I have seen, you totally put your heart and soul into every piece that you create. When you produce something that YOU are proud of and approve of (because we are our own worst critic), you have suddenly put 110% of yourself into it. (The 100% that created it and the extra 10% that approved it.)
When a $ value is suddenly put on it, your work of art is quantified. Then you are forced to judge your work on some scale. And suddenly, you get brought back down to earth and start questioning things, like you are doing right now lol.
I can see where it is suddenly a let down to find you have to spend all that $$ to get your photo on display like that. That would freak me out. BUT, who knows where that will take you? Maybe someone would like to see more of your work? Good things can happen - you never know!
I think the bigger question is when you say "worth it" - what is "it"? (Ok - I sound like a politician now. For the record let me say I am on Motrin and sudafed at the moment and am capable of saying all kinds of stupid things)
Anyway - does "it" mean your time? Or the money spent?
I think you are just in a scary place at the moment with having had to spend all that money. Later, when people start telling you that they saw your art on display, and they LOVED it - you are going to be feeling pretty good. :o)
I am sure this does not answer your question - but again, I blame it on the sudafed.

Congrats! That is a great macro. Nice job!
I have an idea for this month;s theme. When do they cut off the entries? Do you have till the end of the month? Or did I miss it already? lol

You know, silverfoxx, I was just reading your blog again today and I saw the post recent post specifically about the "buying" part.
Honestly I would buy this photo , even for $1000 (though I would have to save up for a couple months). That would be a good return on investment. However, the thing about photography in general though is the non-exclusivity of it. I would have no problem paying this much for a large print of this, but only if the production run is extremely limited, say no more that 20 prints were ever produced.
Small rant/tangent. With Photography as an Art one should not be able to purchase a picture and then your neighbor next day can do the same. It just kind of looses it's appeal. Sometimes I think stock and digital are the primary culprits.
I can get a poster or knockoff of Monet, but it isn't the same as owning one. The same with photography, it gets so diluted. I'm not a fan of going to the Sunday market and seeing all these "reprints" of photo images for sale by some local photographer. Sure, I think it is a great way for photographers to make money. However, as a person who looks for artwork it is just not the right venue. Art would loose soul if someone could go out and buy a print Adam's "Half Dome" (the negative must exist somewhere right).
Yes, some of the master painters often made numerous copies of their work, but it not like there are 1000's of them out there with a never ending production run. Well maybe Rodin went a little overboard. :)
I would also love some of those original William Wegman prints from that huge Kodak he used but that isn't going to happen.
Anyhow, my point is you are one of the few photographers on this site I would buy a print from. However, as mentioned only if the production run was severely limited. I think that is sometimes what makes great artists is giving up a work they treasure so dearly (with photography it is alot eaiser:). |

Reading colorcarnival's thoughts on Svetlana's predicament triggered a few other thoughts.
First, how much did you really invest besides the $1500 you're thinking about? What's your camera and software cost, for example?
Don't forget your time: how much per hour would *you* charge *someone else* to produce a picture for *their* ownership and use, to make it worth your while? For example, I do a little Web development on the side. I charge $75/hr. and never blink. I don't get many jobs at that price, but I'm good at it (so I don't waste much time) and I have my own life to live, so yes you must pay a premium to get me to work for you at night and on weekends. I suspect you have the same considerations, since you said you already have a job.
Now add up all the time you spent thinking, plus setting up, plus shooting, plus editing, plus finding a framing place, plus picking up and mailing the print. Multiply by $75/hr. minimum.
I bet the actual costs plus the value of your time adds up to a lot more than $1500.
Now, try flipping it on its head. Ask anyone here: how much would you be willing to spend to have the opportunity to show your work in a major gallery (whether you have the money or not, how much would you pay to do it)?
Yes, it's a mental game. But that's the point: try to think of it as "WOW - for only $1500, I get to put my photo up in the Denver airport and in these galleries."
Then, anything you get back is just bonus money. But the satisfaction is there regardless.

Oh, Lea, I keep meaning to respond to your ongoing mortgage saga and getting sidetracked! I'm also hoping good things for you. At least they didn't say no off the bat, right? :) So you're one step closer to that mortgage!

A few photogs make their money by selling vastly overpriced prints of their work to pretentious art buyers. I guess they get lucky of have big balls. Who can say?
Personally I think if you want to display your art for yourself you will expect a financial hit out of it - you do that for yourself, for pride or for the sake of your work. You make your money out of other avenues. Eventually someone pays you to hang your work. |

Actually, that doesn't make photography weird, it makes painting weird. After all, music and poetry can't be "owned." You pay only to experience them. Svetlana should get paid by books and magazines, venues that will share her work, not venues that force her to commodify and sell her work. |

I totally agree with you, but even venues (such as big museusms) that share her work with the public will want exclusivity (same with magazines and books). |

I am totally confused again, but it will go over, I just have to think a bit.
Jayson, i totally agree about exclusivity. I sent the study photo and said I was only going to make 33 of them. now I regret it, from now I am going to print one photo maximum 5 times.
thank you so much!
Jeffrey, I agree, it's a great feeling to have a photo there.
after all, i am just a beginner, have been taking photos for half a year, and everything is great.
:)
everything will be fine |

Lea, fingers crossed for your mortgage! I'm glad to hear things appear to be working out!
Svetlana - I wish I had some sage advice. The only thing I can say is this: if anyone I've seen on DPC has the potential to become a gallery artist, it is you. I agree with Deb that you need a sponsor. There must be some grants you could apply for? I also think Don's suggestion about fashion photography might be a good fit if it interests you. You seem to have a lot of will and determination, which is essential for you to get noticed, talent aside. I'm pretty sure there are people out there who will pay big $ for your work, as long as you limit production on your photos. I am also confident you will find them :-) |

I am IN for triptych and I don't think that there will be another one anywhere NEAR like it ... and it came out just as I envisaged it and I am really really PUMPED! I LOVE it when a plan comes together.
I went for a LOOOOONG walk with my wife today with the camera and we stopped at the other end at a very nice restaurant and splurged for Lasagna and wine and then walked back and I took LOTS of pictures.
I think one of them is going to be my FREE study AND I think it will be a BASIC Editing entry into an EXPERT Editing Rules Challenge and I think it is GREAT! So I am pretty chuffed about that too! ... I had a super day!

Today's words of wisdom:
Don't bother trying to burn roses. They just don't catch fire. And when you do make them burn, it doesn't look as good as you'd think. And after you put them out, they stare at you and look all sad :(

Svetlana, first and foremost, remember that this is the jumbled meanderings of a very strange individual.
That has both upsides and downsides to it, BUT......it comes from the heart and I want to tell you I cannot possibly tell you how fortunate that I feel to have made your acquaintenance.
As crazy as this may sound, what you have going for you is the person that you are and what you can bring to the people you care for in life with what you do.
Somehow, putting a price tag on what you do seems to diminish the value of it on a number of different levels.
I see you more as creator of delight, beauty, and hope in what you do and who you are.
You are incredibly insightful, down to earth, yet your perception of the world the way you translate it is a privilege to behold.
I see you more bringing pleasure through your work by and in the way that you express it and share it so much more than by hanging it solely on a wall.
I cannot picture you behind a table in a convention hall hawking your work.....I can see you sprawled knock-kneed in a meadow surrounded by awestruck children showing them how to take pictures of dandelions exploding in the breeze.
When I look at "study" it reaches out to me more than it would did I not know you.
Those of us who know you get more from that picture than any stranger possibly could because they *do* know the person behind, and in front of, the camera.
I'm constantly amazed at your ability to convey the kaleidescope of people and eras and settings and feelings and......
I feel like I get a free ride every time you put something else up for us to behold.
Just look at the four shots on your profile page!
What incredible range!
Somehow, somewhere, some way, the right circumstances will just happen and it won't suck up money that nmakes you question what you do and who you are.
Just let it happen in its time, take care of *you*, and I, and I'm *quite* sure I'm not alone here, PROMISE you things will happen as long as you remain true to yourself and continue to do what you're doing exactly as you're doing.
You are certainly bringing an awful lot of delight, hope, and beauty into this photographer's life.
You have helped my confidence, and restored my faith that truly exquisite beautiful nice people still exist in this strange world.
You bring me peace and make me smile!
You are very special.
