Congrats, Catherine! And Team Suckers, don't forget if you get a new Personal Best (PB), please do toot your own horn. There's also a thread somewhere for such things. I'm in thirds. It's not going to please the "it MUST have a subject on the crosshairs of the thirds lines!" crowd, but it does meet the rule of thirds.... We shall see. |

Yeah, Svetlana ... can I take classes? I really am impressed. That's one beautiful image.
Sooo ... you guys here at the suck club, you actually learn how to do this kind of stuff? I'm thinking I might hang out (incognito) to learn. (I'm serious) |

Ursula you're always welcome no need to be incognito around here, we don't bite you know. Just excuse the mess we're too busy taking sucky photographs to tidy up much.
I think Svetlana is a great example of of what it means to truly suck. She has her own style and shoots what she loves with little if any regard to the voters. She just happens to have a little more style than the rest of us most day it's nice to see it rewarded. |

So that's what this is all about. Jeffrey had mentioned something like that before, but I didn't put two and two together - what you guys are doing is "doing your own thing". Wow. And learning from each other. It's a great concept.
Are all of you part of WPL teams? Or is this separate from WPL? |

It's separate from WPL but some of us are on WPL teams, not me I am too randomly sucky. If you check out the first post in this thread our fearless leader explains the Team Suck ethic pretty well. Basically it's about supporting and learning from each other, commiserating and cheering and mostly finding value in our photographs beyond just the score. It's a very safe place to be for those of us that like to experiment or see the world in our own unique way, here that sort of thing is appreciated. |

Actually, I've learned as much how to be a grownup as develop my skills as a photographer.
Every single time I bang on my highchair, these guys give me "that look", and ask me politely to think of others and behave.
Dammit!
It SUCKS!
Oh no! Could it be????????

Thanks, Jeb! I was a bit surprised by how well my entirely too busy landscape in portrait mode actually did. It really is gorgeous here in springtime, and I was trying to get a bit of that across to the viewer. :-)
I'm off to Amberg - back in a couple of days! (Meanwhile, just got my first comment about how I shouldn't have entered a centered composition in a rule of thirds.... heh!)
Oh, and welcome, Ursula! Hang out all you want, and feel free to share tips and tricks, too. You've got a lot you can teach!

The thing that is most apparent to me about what Svetlana personifies and it's what I strive for more than anything is that sense of wanting to use the medium to achieve what *she* wants first and foremost to communicate.
I'm still struggling enough and insecure enough that I will sell out to a certain extent to acquire the accolades, but it isn't what I want as much as being able to accurately capture the real essence of what I photograph.
I constantly find that the more often I shoot the way I really feel that I see, the better I do, but I all too often chicken out and try to suit what I *think* I should shoot in a certain situation.
My best shots are all like that......each one of the ones on my profile page have the least amount of editing and the most amount of my soul in them.
This little epiphany came to me while I looked at what Svetlana was saying to me with her shot in Hair and it may have made me fully cognizant of what it really is that I want from photography for the first time in my life.
Damn, girl, you're even good with a busted leg!.....8>)
What an incredible artist, human being, and teacher you are, young lady!

Grattis, Svetlana.
No 14b from a series of 32, incompleted bust of a woman. Foreign languages are more fun to listen to than to learn and understand.
And I didn't even vote on that image on account of the secret friendly voting police sniffing around our part of town...
Or maybe it's because it should say une femme and I get all upset by grammatical wossnames :) |

My Landscape came in as a new PB for me, my first 6 in fact. Not bad for an image that I entered mostly as an experiment.
I've included the original in the entry to show comparison.
I have a feeling the original would have come in around 4.5.
ETA thanks to Mel for her great comment!

C'mon guys, I'm doing my best to suck here in Rule of Thirds, and I'm being outsucked! I'm at 4.8 with only one DNMC comment. I'm going to improve upon that, I'm sure. Hoping for about a 4.5 to finish with at least 8 good DNMC comments. Keep fingers crossed! |
