I notice you are a recently new registered user here, so I offer the following:
You have opened the can of worms.
Once opened other members may:
1. Take a limited DOF image of a worm.
2. Stretch a worm to see how long it can get before it breaks.
3. Eat a worm if so desired.
4. String a worm on a hook and go fishing with it.
5. Give the opener of the can a worm-lashing.
You, however, may not:
1. Arbitrarily close the can.
2. Attempt to take our worms away.
3. Eat the worms yourself.
4. Pretend the can was in a forest and no one was there to watch you open it.
5. Substitute a wet noodle for the lashing in option #5.
;-)
All in good fun, of course...
...and Welcome to the insanity!
(Consider yourself properly worm-lashed.) |

I didn't intend to understand you wrong! I just happened to do so. I didn't do it on purpose! ;)
Originally posted by RobMcGee: I am NOT talking about giving anybodies money away. There's a difference between giving away a temporary membership for free and giving away the money it is worth. The intention was to give someone the possibilities of a membership that wouldn't purchase one. It's not lost money if you see it that way. (TO KAVEY) |
I believe (though I don't have any statistics to give you) that a majority of ribbon winners are already paid members. Not all, but a majority. So actually, I think giving membership away as prizes would reduce the amount of purchased memberships made and thus it would mean a reduction of income for the site owners.
Originally posted by RobMcGee: To "stay in the game" by "winning" temporary memberships is in my eyes not that much worse a goal than doing it for the glory. (compared to $$$) (TO KAVEY) |
You are entitled to your opinion. I disagree. Memberships do have a monetary value so people are no longer playing for glory but for a tangible prize. How can that not change the dynamic?
Originally posted by RobMcGee: ANYWAY, it was just an idea. Something like giving away books to students that win a writing competition or new running shoes to those that win a race. To encourage. |
Nothing wrong with posting one's ideas! Please don't think that my posting an opposite opinion implies that I feel you should not have posted your idea. That's not the case at all. It's a good thing to participate and sound others in the community out on changes you have thought of. I happen to think this particular proposal is cheeky because it involves volunteering uses for someone else's (real or potential) income. But good on you for stepping forward and asking for input.
Originally posted by RobMcGee: This thread is dead.. let's go back to taking pictures :-) |
Since you addressed several of your comments to me by name, I wanted to take a moment to just let you know my response. I do appreciate that you've decided to drop the idea (though a few discouraging posts aren't an official "no" so don't feel you have to if it's something you're passionate about) but I did want to respond to the points you directed at me.
Warm regards
Kavita

the idea may actually help bring in more money.
the same way sharewares work - try the full version and get you addicted to the darn update button, among other things. |

give someone a week of that dam update button when they think they've got a good picture, and they'll be bound to pay for the addiction :P |

Except I'd repeat that I think that a majority of ribbon winners are already paid members so have already tried it and know what it's about.
EDIT: Just had a look at the 15 ribboning images on the home page at this moment. Taken by 14 individuals. Every single one already has full membership.

If prizes get awarded, what are all the people who say "it's only a virtual ribbon, so people have no reason to get worked up over [insert gripe here]" going to do? |

I realize this is D & L's decision as to whether to use something like this to promote the site or not. However, what about a compromise like the following:
Every quarter or every six months or so an open challenge could be chosen at random, by D & L, and not disclosed to the participants in the site, for which a membership would be awarded to the winner. |

I just love it when everyone thinks they can start giving memberships away in a commercial site like this or even have such a long thread discussing it. They have always asked for suggestions but hasn't anyone noticed ... no SC or ownership comments ;). I get a kick out of this sometimes, we all start to think because we paid a "membership" we think it's our site. Just love it. There are sites that are similar such as BetterPhotos that do give prizes and memberships away. The owners here just have not chosen to do so, at this point it's just not in their business plan. |
