First of all apologies if this has been discussed previously, although I could not find a similar comparison as to the one that I'm looking for.

I currently use PS 7.0 and only JPGs. I'm thinking of making more use of RAW in due course. However, for now, I was wondering whether I should use the upgrade package to go to CS3 or look at this new product LIghtroom.

Could somebody please explain, simply, what the difference is with Lightroom compared to PS? Also, where does Adobe Bridge fit into the picture?

Apologies again for being so dumb on this! :(

Thanks

Comparing apples to oranges and the best thing todo is download a 30 day trial.

But since your using PS 7.0 your lacking CS2/CS3's current raw abilities. I beta tested Lightroom it was interesting mainly alot of adjustments alot of them. Inside of a bridge like but much better program. Honestly bridge is easier to scroll through but slow, Lightroom seems to load images faster but seems slower to scroll through?

The best thing is if theirs an avaliable trial get it have dialup? have someone burn it for you.

Lightroom is like a digital dark room it is not the editing tool that CS3 is. So unless your just trying to process raw's to the max you still need somethign to edit it with as far as adding other elements, doing major surgery and what not.

The raw converter in the alpha of CS3 is pretty close to the raw converter of Lightroom, and I'll bet that the released raw converter for CS3 is very close.

Lightroom is a cataloging program that lets you make adjustments to photos quickly and easily. I don't think you can apply an effect to only one area of the photo (ie no selections), I don't think you have layers, but you do have lots of control over brightness, color, etc. You even get curves and lots of tonal adjustments. Lightroom lets you catalog (add metatags, rate, etc) lots of photos quickly and easily. Lightroom also has some slideshow and printing capability.

PS3 is a great tool to edit photos, especially if you want to work on one part of the photo, use filters or plugins, or do more advanced stuff.

The two programs work together, they don't exactly compete.

Thanks for that and the couple of off-line replies I've had.
I now understand the difference. I may buy the CS3 upgrade (£160) which is cheaper than a the full product!

Thanks
