I was wishing today that I could keep my personal voting rank on images after a challenge was over. I figured maybe that was too resource intensive. As I let the idea slowly drip out of my brain I realized that another neat thing would be to give an award to those who are the most successful in voting for challenge winners. Using the very data I was thinking about it would be a simple data base query to indicate any voters who successfully predicted the top three images. Then I realized that without adding a ribbon pick variable this would not be possible. Without another variable we would only be rewarding those who vote 9 or 10 on a large number of images. (as much as we love these people it would not be fair) ;)
So the modified idea is:
Add a selection on the voting page to indicate that this image is your pick for one of the ribbons. No need for an indication of which ribbon. You would only be able to tag 3 images per challenge. Only paying members would be eligible. Keep track throughout the year on the top three or five people with the highest number of three correct guesses per challenge and give'em an award once a year. Say..... free membership for a year. And put a link to their protfolio on the front page for a week. Of course SC would not be eligible for the award, but I believe they already get free membership.
Anyway, that's the suggestion. What do y'all think? |

Sorry, cant quite see the point in that? An award for picking the winners? Geez, what next? A set of rules that allows `expert editing`?
Oh.. oops.
I can see how it would be fun, and kudos for coming up with the idea, but I think we really need to focus on photography here.

OK, that stuff I said above, ignore it.. This could be a great idea if implemented correctly AND, only eligible to people who vote on ALL the entries in a challenge. Hopefully that will stem the tide of disappearing voters. It would need a bit of refining, but yes, it could be workable, maybe make it mandatory to vote on certain challenges (Freestudies for example) to have your picks included in the half yearly stats or something. yup, not a bad idea, not bad at all. |

Hmmmm, I wasn't even thinking of trying to encourage voting. It might indeed stimulate voting. Maybe a trial would be nice. Because I wonder just how many people do identify the top three in a lot of challenges. I try to on almost every challenge I've ever voted and I've never succeeded. I've picked the winner about 3 times. I would think some of the same skills that help you create a ribboning image would be needed to select one.
I like your time delay thinking. ;) I work that way far to often in my old age. ;) Yeah, maybe require that you vote in at least 25 challenges during the year to be eligible. Hmmmmmm. Good thoughts. Thanks. |

I'm not sure what you mean, but I can think of at least two ways your wish has already been granted.
First, your vote shows up as a red bar in the voting histogram.
Second, go look at the contest results and tick the box on the left "order by my vote."
Try this - it's the link to that option for the Anachronism challenge:

I think we should keep as far away from influencing voters as possible.

Other than influencing them to vote, how does my idea influence them? What other problems were you thinking about? |

Had to turn it over a couple of times in my head. I was afraid that this could cause some kind of popularity vote, but I think I was wrong.
As long as someone can give an image a 1 and still predict it will win a blue ribbon it's ok. :)

Yup, I see what you mean. I'd have to give it a bit of thought. And...... offering something of value for the award would definitely attract problems. Maybe just a trial run for the fun of it. |

Yet another thing I'd fail miserably at. :-( |
