Hey all,

I was sitting down yesterday doing our taxes because it is that wonderful time of the year, when my macaw decided she wanted to come over for a visit. She climbed off the chair back she was sitting on crossed the floor and climbed up on the couch.

Being engrossed in the taxes I didnt even notice her. She then decided she wanted to be in my lap so she grabbed the side of the laptop to come over pierceing the lcd monitor of the screen and causing a huge crack to form across it and messing up all the information being sent there.

Unforunately this was also the computer that I did my post processing on so until I can save for either a new laptop or a new monitor to hook up to the laptop I guess I might be out of dpc for a while.

Just wanted to share my depressive story, but I guess it could have been worse.

Thanks for listening,
Rich

:)

I feel your pain with 8 4 legged critters in the house always wondering what the next thing to be eaten is.

AND.... the vid card on my laptop went out back in October, I had to wait until Tax Refunds to replace it....

Well I can understand your frustration as well.

We have 3 birds (big ones like the macaw), 2 cats and a dog. My biggest issue is there is no tax return this year. So its gonna stink.

Oh well,

Just got off the phone will Dell, they said it will cost $800.00 to just replace the screen.... What a rip! Guess I am saving to buy a new laptop.

Sighs.

need to buy the 'what-if-i-drop-it' warranty. it adds a bit to the price-tag, but covers just this type of thing. or check to see if what type of incidental damages your renters/homeowners covers on personal items. rotten news, hope it straightens out for you soon.

There are others who offer replacement screens. Just google for "replacement lcd for laptop" (without the ""). Here is one example. Never used them, never had to replace one, can't recommend one. But it might be an option.

I think, when the laptop has a normal VGA port, that you can hook up an el cheapo CRT for the time being (pay no more than 50 dollars for a 2nd hand -call around, someone must have one stored away somewhere-), when you can still see the settings that is. :)

A lot of home insurers have an *unwritten/unpublished* policy that two or three claims, regardless of amount, in three years can/will result in policy termination. Once you have that happen, you'll be on higher risk insurance policies.

I know it sucks, but that's the way it is. Be careful when making home owners claims.

As the others said, replacing a screen is not really difficult if you know what you 're doing

Yea I have heard this, thats why I am really hesitant to claim it, especially since we havent been in the house all that long and havent had the insurance to long either.

I do not think I would have an issue replacing it myself it is more along the lines of where to get it and the cost of the thing itself.

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Sell the macaw;)

Seriously, though. Sorry to hear about that. Hope you sort it out soon.

Darn! That is a sad, sad story!

And she was just trying to be affectionate and snuggle up. Did she get screamed at? She must have wondered what all the hub-bub was when you had that realization of what had happened. I say, "Pooor Hot_Pixel". . . .but also "Poooor Bird".

No, actually I didnt yell at all at the bird which is suprising for me... I just picked her up, put her back on the chair and then went off to whine to my wife about my busted computer.

Yay me, I controlled my temper.

well ive droped mylaptop and its fairly cheap...depending on the model to get a new screen put in...maybe 2-300$ vs. 1500-3000 you spent on it...or if youre really in a pinch...hook it up to your desktop monitor

OMG. I commend you. Ask my wife; I'd be livid. I'd be like those cartoon images of people with steam coming out of their ears.

does that laptop have a S-video output? if so and you have a TV or VCR with a S-video input you could hook it up to a TV, the resolution is not that great but better than nothing at all.
